Time to replace the Raceface Deus on my Yeti 575, but not too sure what for. I've used Raceface on both my mountain bikes for about the last 5 years and generally they're pretty good, but the bottom brackets don't seem to last too well and they've started to get a bit pricey. I can now get XTR crankset for less than the Deus and am thinking of switching, but what about other stuff, such as Truvativ, FSA and Middleburn. Anyone any thoughts/experiences with these???

Had Truativ Hossfella cranks for a while, they were quite good and value for money, not to expensive, still got them as spare hung on a wall, but they were replaced with Raceface Diabolus, which i got as part of a deal when bought a cove frame, they are very good, but you are right the bottom bracket was not fantastic, but did last a while and not to pricey to replace.

I have some FSA cranks on my Cove HJ at present, very light, not as stiff as i would like (but you can not have it all) not so sure about the ring quality, but they were not top of the range, and good value. They are heading for the wifes bike as i have brand new Raceface atlas cranks waiting to be fitted, which were very good value, check out CRC, and look like they will be very good.

Never had middleburn my self, but friends rave about them,

i would have gone for a pair of shimano XT cranks, if i had not got a deal on the RF atlas, the XT cranks good allround and can be picked for a good price, prefer them to XTR ones.

good luck

I was about to recommend the new 2008 XT kit I've just bought and fitted, but you obviously wanna spend more money than I did wink

Unless your a major weight weenie, then the XT's are preferable to the XTR's with the XTR specific chainrings... And you cant fit a bash on the XTR.

The 08 XTs really are all you could ever ask for in cranks...

Er, 6'2" and 90kg/14st - so prob not.

Thanks also for comments about XT - only picked out XTR as they were the closest to Deus in price. Will have bit more of a nose around.

I have some Middleburn rings on XT arms which are nice , can't comment on wear though as they are on a "low use" bike but they look and feel well made, Current XTR chainset and Bottom Bracket has offered me excellent service over the last 18 months, and I've also used the previous incarnation of the XT chainset and that to has offered excellent service.

Appears to be back to the age old question.

XT or XTR? Does what I get justify the cost?

i've had truvativ budget cranks and they weren't too hot. paint came off in no time, the bottom braket went and the isis teeth failed on the crank arm. to be fair tho i did get a whole three months alpine riding out of them.

wouldn't buy them again.

XTR if youre trying to save some weight ive been running for a year now and they are really good. XT are good and not much heavier. Whoever said you cant run a bashring on XTR is wrong my friend runs them on his DH bike with an MRP.

Personally, I'd go for XTR, they really are that much nicer - a real special bit of kit, and defintely worthy of being fitted to a Yeti.

XT cranks are fantastic as well - you really are getting a bargain there - however they just aren't 'quite* finished as well as the XTRs. LX also, very VERY good value and quality. However as mentioned, yer after something very nice biggrin

If you can bear it, get the 2006 model, and get them at a reduced price - then you're not forking out so much - yet still getting an amazing quality crankset. Yes, the anodising wears off, but they work just so well...

New 2007/8 year XTR comes with the very cool carbon and ti middle chainring - but you need to lay out £200 to get the chainset. They ARE very, very nice, but I'm waiting for the 2009 XTR before I upgrade.

BTW - Hollowtech II all the way - it IS a great upgrade. I'm fancying a set of Raceface/Hope external BB cups soon biggrin

It was looking at those XTRs on CRC that made me think twice before getting RF stuff again. But I have seen plenty of XT cranks that look sooooo secondhand cos the anodising has worn off and I'm not sure the C & Ti middle is worth it for me.

So, its either XTR or Deus - out with the coin...

The new XTR's don't look anywhere near as tatty when you get the shoe scuffing on them.

If its between the XTR's & RF option, XTR's every time. The RF bottom brackets are junk compared to Shimano. No idea about how long the chainrings last, I only run single ring so can't help there.

I'm very happy with my XTR's. From memory they are lighter than the Dues as well.

2008 XTR chainrings are much better longevity wise. Remember that XTR is really a race chainset. So if you're out riding 3x a week in wet and muddy conditions, you should expect to see chainring wear and tear sooner than if you were using a hardcore Middleburn chainring.

08 XTR are much better than 06/07 chainrings in this regard.

07 XT chainsets wore their middle rings quickly I believe. Again, problem solved for 08.

Having said that, I've run an 07 chainset for about a year with no problems wear wise at all. But then I don't ride 3x a week at the moment frown (did all last summer/autumn tho)

Again, this is my personal opinion, I don't worry so much about the anodising wearing on my chainsets - however thats because I think it looks cooler worn biggrin

However, I appreciate that people like to keep their hard earned kit pristine, and yes, the newer XTR does stay neater for longer - mines a wreck already - but then thats because I've ridden pretty much none stop in gritty mud - and my pedal setup means my shoes wear against the crank:

I will say though, the XTRs feel slightly stiffer than the XTs, although NOWHERE near as stiff as Saints...

Also, just for shits and giggles - Saints wear too...

Yes, I know, "Oil yer chain!"

It's generally people who ride flats who scuff up the cranks more than the SPD users I believe.

I have a set of Saints that are 2 years old now & are pretty much silver on the entire face. Lot of people strip them down & polish them now, because it just looks a bit tidier.

I run XT (M960) and XTR (M970) both very good chainsets.

Neil - What are they doing new in the 09 XTR Chainset?

AFAIK they are doing lots and lots of carbon goodness lick

2008 wasn't all that different, but 2009 is supposed to be uber-cool.

Other than that I don't know really - I just know I'm happy enough with what I have, and don't see the need to upgrade really smile

Yeah, its pretty common knowledge that Shimano will up the carbon count. They've started with the 08 XTR Shadow mech and its likely they'll continue.

Hadn't heard any confirmed rumours about chainsets though. Press normally get leaks around march time, so shouldn't be too long.

Had some Durace carbon cranks in my hands a week ago and they are apparently the same in xtr08 format.Looked good, no real weight saving though and i got the impression it was more about the bling than the function.

Anyone tried Rotor Rings?Had some on for a few months and i'm convinced they are brill.Going to put one on a single speed smile
