Just wondering as there seems to be a decent amount of knowledge on here, just wondering if there is anything for around that about that is of a decent enough brand to take some abuse, obviously for that price only going to be looking and a fixed for, or bottom of the range front suspension bike ?

any help would be cool

cheers

My Brother Brought a new Specialised Hardrock of some sort for £329 (I think!) earlier in the year. It has Disc brakes etc, I beleive it is considered a decent bike.

Found it here;

Carrera Vulcan is circa £300. Don't be put off with it being from Halfords - WMB loved it to bits and called it a proper mountain bike for £300. Carrera also do a FS Trail bike for around £500 to that MBR have raved about for the last two years. The name escapes me at the moment though.

If you live near a Decathalon store then any of their bikes are worth considering. With the exception of the base models every review I've read of one has been glowing.

I got a GT avalanche 1.0 last year for ~£350, respectable enough - although it turns out 90% of my riding is daily exercise on road or smooth paths so not really what I needed but it does the job

I would certainly reccomend the Giant Rincon model, believe its actually cheaper about £250, well worth the money.

Either MBR or What Mountain Bike had a £300 review last month, they rated the Gary Fisher Wahoo highly (I think)

I'd go for the Specialized Hardrock for that money

IMO a reduced bike from 2007 is a good way to maximise what you get for your money, but you'll need to know what size you want etc and be happy to buy it online without a test ride.

Have a look here for some discounted 2007 bikes, and here for more advice.

If you aren't comfortable buying before trying, find your local bike shop and pop in for a chat about what it is you're after. There are plenty of serviceable entry level bikes for around £300 these days, but beware; it's just a stepping stone to the expensive ones! smile

Check out Halfords now, I've just got the next model up, the 2007 Kraken, for £266.

Get an old Giant XTC hardtail. Truly superb value for money and excellent own-brand hydraulic discs. Shouldn't be much more than that...

There have been some decent looking 2nd hand bikes on eBay for that sort of price rtecently too.

Have a look on Evans for the 2006 Kona Lavadome. It is £399 but the original price was £599. It is only in 14" and 18" but I am 6'2" and the 18" is usable. The frame on that bike is outstanding and well worth upgrading when the supplied components wear out.

I work at a big bike shop in Oxford. We do a bike in our january sale at £275 (usually sells for £329) at the moment, but probably not a brand you've heard of, but the spec speaks for itself. It has a FULL Shimano Deore groupset, inc. discs, dual control shifters, chainset and bb, plus an RST Gila suspension fork with rapid travel adjustment (60-100mm). Compare that spec with anything from any other brand and you'd be rather shocked. Finishing kit may look a little basic, but a new set of tyres and a nice riser bar is about all you may want to add. Highly recommended, and I've sorted this bike for a couple of my riding friends who've been more than happy

get on ebay and look at second hand hardtails. some bargains out there at the moment.

i paid £760 for this!

i know thats more than your budget but it illustrates how much bike you can get for your money when you consider it might have cost £2700 new: http://www.bromleybike.co.uk/ishop/399/shopscr2111...

you should be able to get a fantastic hardtail a couple of years old for 300.

i saw an older santa cruz chamelion (sp?!) go for that sort of money.

Specialized Hard Rock or GT Avalanche are the obvious choices.

Maybe scan ebay for a second hand bargain too.

Just been into Halfords for a look and theyve got the Vulcan for £199 and the Kraken for £265.99. So is it worth spending the extra £60 on the Kraken. From reading the reviews on MBR they said the wheels are a bit heavy on the Kraken, but is the extra spec worth it ?

Personally I would go for a decent 2nd hand bike. There is some risk re ebay but you could get a great bike for £300. I have a Trek 6700SLR (06 model) that I have had for a yr and a half. It was an £800 ish bike (plus the extras) and has stood up really well to my regular use. That sort of bike would probably fetch £300 - £400 on ebay me thinks? I will probably stick mine on ebay soon (new full suss replaces it) and someone will get a decent bike for cheap bike money.
Great brakes (Juciy Avid 5, XT/LX stuff, great wheels, suspension etc.....).
Plus they look great in dark grey/black.
