love getting the best value for money that I can, and am looking to spend up to £700 on a road bike for general fitness and maybe competition. Buying RRP seems to be a completely alien concept to me, and I'd like to buy a used bike for a good bit less than rrp.

Other than ebay, which I am scanning, are there any other websites that anyone could recommend?

i just bought a '07 Colnago Ramarro from winstanleys bikes... £600.

okay so it's not an italian-built frame, but it is a colnago nethertheless... not a bad deal as it was reduced from £900.

can't wait for it to arrive!... just had to get my pedals (new Ultegra jobbies from Planet-X) and shoes (Shimano jobbies from Chain Reaction), and then I can escape the family and go riding for x'mas!

I know you've said you want to avoid RRP but bear with me, last year I bought a Ribble and have loved every second on it - OK so I had to go to Preston to be measured (I was passing - honest) and while not a true custom build sitting on a jig while things were adjusted to my ideal shape certainly made it feel like that - the moment they put your name beside a frame number in the frame book felt pretty good. Then we chose frame colour, gearing (matched to the area I live and my level of fitness at that time) etc .... everything was an option - great fun and for only £699 (7005SL model with Campag Veloce Groupset) with delivery once built at another £20 I'm very happy.

i have friends with Ribbles and they swear by them. i seriously considered going down that route until i found the colnago... i quite liked the idea of their sloping top tube frame with a nice set of mavic wheels.

dave hinde also looks quite good news, although i'm not sure how good the frame and forks really are... the carbon fork on my colnago retails at more than the frame and forks for the hinde.

my first road bike was a graham weigh with a 531 frame... i absolutely loved it... so forgiving and a little more 'special' than the peugeots and the like.

For other opinions on Dave Hinde it's worth checking out the road forums on bikeradar.com......

Ribble looks excellent.

Spec your own bike and pay a similar price to a mass market model.
