Hello people,

I'm looking for a used full suss mtb.

I do occasional trips to wales, chamonix, the lakes etc and aslo more milage type rides locally. I'd like to get somthing that climbs well but can also handle the odd drop off week of downhill (more technical single track alpine stuff)

Was thinking about:

sub 5/five
santa cruz superlight

any other suggestions?

got about 500-700 to spend which seems to get a lot this time of year :-)

cheers guys,

Difficult to say really, you've got to buy the best quality, best fitting, least used bike you can find for the money which makes it a little too prohibitive to say 'buy a xxxx'. To my mind you would be wise to have a shortlist of 4 or 5 bikes you'd like, make sure you know what will fit you from the manufacturer and keep your eyes peeled.

I tend to recommend Commencals a lot, but god damn they are just SO freaking good.

You should be able to pick up a Meta5 frameset for that amount of money. Neil's got one and I nicked it for a day's DHing a month ago and it was awesome. Made me seriously consider whether I need a full on DH bike for the UK.

Meta5 with some 4-5in forks would do you proud.

Well, I can personally recommend a Meta4, shorter travel than the 5.5 but still every bit as good as people say it is and I think Merlin still have a few 07 models going for cheap.

I'm not after buying something new even if it's on sale. I'm looking for a well specced bike a couple of years old (or more possibly) like this: http://www.bikemagic.com/classifieds/advert.asp?c=...

basically i want owt for nowt ;-)

Orange Sub 5
Orange Patriot
Kona Dawg / Coilair
Santa Cruz Heckler.

The Superlight is not really up to much DH action, its a bit short and steep. Std Old model Heckler much more so, the newer model is even better - fabulous frame if you can find one. Only came out this year.

Was just coming along to suggest the Cove G-Spot. But beaten to it. Good taste that man.

I have a Cove. 6" travel at the rear (I believe) and they say run 140mm forks upfront.

Mines black and I'm running 130mm up front and I just love the bike.

Buy it. You'll be the only other person I know with one.

G-Spot's are lovely bikes! I sometimes borrow my friend's one and it's just so nice. Like riding on a magic carpet biggrin Not too bad on the climbs but obviously heavier than a hard tail and thus requires a little more effort (I found anyway). However, it more than makes up for it on the downs!

I've ridden a Supreme6 around Cwm Carn on the XC loop. Few pointers...

- Fit a telescopic seatpost as the seat-tube is interrupted.
- Can be a bit bobby out of the saddle, so climbs are best seated.

- DAMN FUN BIKE on the downhills.

Still think a Meta 5 would be better

Personaly, I've got an Orange Five and it's brilliant but what about this:

Rather nice. And it's Noah's Arc that are selling it.

right guys.

lots of people giving the G spot thumbs up.

I've got to travel down to bristol tomorrow to photograph a hotel and the above bike is not that far away.

i'm thinking it's a bargain and i'm seriously considering buying this bike and chaning the set-up around over the next few motnhs ready for the spring. swapping the trippleclamps for foe single crown forks, lighter triple chainset, etc etc

what do we think??!?

Great bike - but it will be bobtastic with the Vanilla RC shock - no propedal on them.

Slow uphill, but will rail down. Dont know if thats the kind of thing your after - certainly very different to the superlight you mentioned earlier.

laugh i know!

suppose i can change the rear shock :-) just seems too good to miss

i'm leaning towards getting a bike with more freeride angles and building it lightweight.

it's the linkage and bottom bracket pivot point attracting me here.

i don't ride that aggressive and i'm not too heavy so it's really all about getting the angles right rather than bomb-proofness!

In that case - check out mine -

Sold a DH bike and an XC bike to build this, based on exactly the same principles as what you've said. 6.3" travel, air shocks, fully geared.

The frames are utter, utter bargains - I picked mine up, brand new, last years model, for £550. thats half the RRP. Superb.
That build weighs 32lb - theres another 2lb to be had by swapping out my shitty old wheelset which came off my DH bike.

Full length seat-tube aswell which is crucial on an all-day bike.
