You need to let go your brand affiliation and open you mind to the alternatives on offer.

Having tried (extensively) the alternatives - my latest bike has been built up with a full Shimano groupset once more.

Its the best available.

Looks good, wouldnt have bought an XTR mech though - it'll be smashed off within the week.

Went for 08 XT Shadow myself - spot on.

I reckon it will be ok but it so light you wonder how strong it is!!

You're so right Shimano boy. Now enough of this banter. It's time to rid the streets of scum to keep them safe for the honest hard working simple folk of London once again. To the Cove / Orange.

why yes and thanks for asking we all know Shadow features a super low profile design that reduces the risk of damage from trail side hazards smile

yeah also means instead of scratching a rear mech when lying a bike down it will scratch the frame must get a stand smile

looks nice that new XTR mech,

just bought a Med short cage XO rear mech and a pair of XO shifter's tonight,

second hand, but mint, from a friend. Was going to get X9 to go on the HJ, but to good a deal to pass on.

as long as i do not break the rear mech as the RRP, is mad. it would have to be replaced with a X9.

XO is very nice too your right though the RRP is huge!! but it's still 50% more than a list price XTR luckily I paid under list.

i needed to go to 9 speed on the cove HJ, as the new XT front mech did not like the 8 speed chain, noisey, and my 8 speed XT shifters have done 10 years and 3 bikes so needed to be retired as they were starting to feel worn.

These were a very cheap deal compared to RRP, and are stunning quality, so you only live once and they should last me, as long as i do not put them on the stiffee, as i would probably accidently trash the rear mech on it.

Long cage vs Short cage ?

What's the advantages and disavantages of each ? Long cage is presumably easier to shift but more exposed to damage ?

long cage allows for a wider range of gears 11 - 34 for example and a short cage is more for your downhill and freeride as there is less to stick out and can you closer gear ratios

Kind of.

You make your choice dependant on your bike setup. The cage is what takes up the slack in the chain, which occurs from having different ratios.

Some examples -

Hardtail, single chainring = super short cage

Hardtail, 2 chainrings = Short or medium cage

Suspension frame, 2 chainrings = Medium cage

Suspension frame , 3 Chainrings = Long cage

The spread on your cassette makes a difference aswell, a wide range mtb cassette needs more slack than a close roadie setup.

For the same given transmission, a suspension frame will usually require a longer cage than a hardtail. This is due to chain growth, I.e. the distance 'twixt wheel and BB changing as the rear wheel moves through its path of travel. Worst offenders for this are high single pivot bikes, such as an Orange 5, Santa Cruz Bullit etc.

HTH biggrin
