I've noticed some damage on the sidewall of my rear tyre, a Specialized Adrenaline. I've been quite happy with the tyre (better than the tyres that were on my old Marin Hawkhill) but before I get a replacement are there any tyres out there that come highly recommended as an allrounder XC tyre?

Thanks

I've currently got these: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?Mod... which seem to be coping well so far.

For an absolute all weather / all terrain tyres, my faves are: Panaracer Cinders 2.1 (folding).

There are definately faster tyres for road sections, but these babies provide so much confidence off road they are ace. Added benefit: most tyres I'm fixing at least one pinch puncture per ride, no problems with these even when the going is seriously fast and rocky.

Others:

Panarcer Fire XC 2.1 upfront, with a Panaracer Razor MX 2.3 at the back. Lovely and fast.

  • both quite expensive combos, but good.

For pure XC, I've got a Schwalbe Nobby Nic on the front, and a Racing Ralph on the back. When it gets a bit muddier I'll put on the Panaracer Fire XC Pro mentioned above, which work better in the wet, and last a lot longer than the Schwalbe tyres.

I run Schwalbe Racing Ralphs as my "XC" tyres. Very fast rolling and good grip on dry/hardpacked surfaces (fire roads/trails etc.)

I do find them to drag quite a lot in the mud though so Im after an alternative for the winter.

I've just ordered a set of Maxxis High Roller XC's for my Hardtail. I use the 2.5 High Rollers on my big bike so I expect the XC version to work just as well.

Pablo, did you go for the 2.1" versions? My GF has some for her Fisher and they come up VERY small, its more of a 1.9" IMO.
High Rollers are a good all round tyre but I find they do not have the best rolling resistance (I use them for DH type stuff)

Dave- Yes, I went for the 2.1's. I currently have 2.25 Schwalbe Nobby Nics on the Bizango and previously used 2.25 Racing Ralphs but fancied something narrower and a bit more grippy. I've been using the 2.5 super tackies on the Yeti for a while now so I know the tread characteristics quite well which is why I went for the XC version for the hard tail. Cheers for the info though. The tyres will arrive tomorrow so I should be able to try them out on Friday evening.

And cost loads too!

I've got Michelin XCR's on mine. Still pretty pricey, but super grippy.

Both of the above look the tits too!

I use Panaracer XC Pro for Cross Country,

But in recent riding I think that the XC Pro is more suited to a lightweight bike.

On my XC Hardtail the XC Pro are great no matter what
On my full suss the XC pro is no great no matter what

I have High Roller Super Tacky dual ply blah blah blah for the Alps and will probably try the XC version on the suss once the XC's are done as I don't think the XC suits the full suss.

Firetrail and other loose surfaces I use Maxxis Larsen TT 2.1 on the back - despite the look they're also pretty good in slop and they roll fast enough for me. Maxxis Crossmark on the front, and a set of Minions for downhill.

Also have a Wierworlf for mud and the grip is terrific.

Have tried High Roller and can't seem to find a pressure that works well for them.

I got my Michelins on ebay for half RRP too hehe Wouldn't ever pay RRP without checking the net first.
