I'm having trouble with my rear freehub at the minute on the Commencal, as it's only a few months old I have no doubt i'll get it replaced under warranty, but I do quite fancy taking the opportunity to invest in some fancy new wheels.
As the bike is white I do quite fancy getting some wheels made up with white rims, or even buying factory wheels with white rims. So far i've seen that Halo do the Freedom disc wheels in white. Does anyone know of another credible manufacturer of wheels or rims that produce in white? Lighter the better obviously, for XC and singletrack use. The Halo's are 1025g front and 1210g rear.

Do a search on Azonic rims. I'm sure they make a model in white.

DT Swiss do some.

Make sure you are sitting down when you read the cost though...

Anyone want to enlighten me as to what makes them better than say the standard ones on my Spec 2007 RH?

Usually better means lighter and stronger, it also means more moolah. How much lighter and stronger you want your wheels depends on how much of the afore mentioned moolah your willing to shell out. In my case... not that bloody much!

Hey Neil, nice to see you back anyways.

ETA: Are DT Swiss considered about the best for wheels then? Hubs, spokes etc too?

Are they that much lighter that they make a difference?

Or are you going to need to spend '000s to make a difference. I'm looking at shocks that will save me say 1.7lbs for £450, but for £400+ on wheels, I guess the saving is not that much, but the strength will be the main ad'

Of course it all depends on what your replacing. Halo Freedom disc wheels for example weigh 2235g the pair and cost around £200. The DT Swiss jobbies above weigh 1750g and cost over £400. That's over 1lb lighter, but also £200 dearer. Another thing to consider is your tyres and whether you run tubeless or not. Losing the tubes saves a good chunk IME.

A lighter tyre and wheelset will mean you'll roll faster and will make the bike handle better, yes, you do notice.

Also bear in mind those DT Swiss wheels are an XC/Freeride (I run the same rims on my XC bike) but Sam Hill and others use them for Downhill racing and most DT sponsored 4X riders use them for racing.

They're effing strong rims.

Then you've got the DT hubs which are sublime. Soooo nice and very well built.

Spokes are top DT ones... pretty much the best.

Then hand built and come with spare spokes, 20mm adapter, and a signed card by the guy who built them.

So you're paying for a very high quality product that will last. And look pimp biggrin

Very true, but they wouldn't use a rim if it broke half way down the run. They need 100% confidence in their kit.

I've hung up my DT Swiss rims on plenty of jumps angel and they're still great biggrin
