if you are going for looks (like I do) then don't get a full sus. Most are quite ugly imho and some look downright offensive. get yourself a top of the range hardtail. they look so much nicer and cooler

You certainly will. Some nice hardtails (frames or full bikes) which catch my eye are -

Merlin Marlt 4
The new Cube
Scott Scale
Trek 8000

As looks are high on the agenda:

Scott Scale 35

Fit some faster more road orientated rubber (e.g. specialized nimbus tyres) and it will fly and look ace too.

Commencal Flame - Aluminium - but buy it as a frame only package and build it up. The price of the complete bike is more than the sum of its parts. Also instead of suspension forks fit some nice carbon rigid ones - Pace, On-One and Whytes all do them (Pace are the best though).

Cove Handjob XC - Steel - and build it as above.

Scott Scale - very nice too.

Kenisis - always liked the look of the Kenisis XC bikes but have not riden one. Well priced though.

Pipedreams Sirus - steel.

On-One Non-Sliding Dropouts Inbred - Steel - Heavyish but the price is amazing. Cracking ride to.

All of the above are HT's.

IMO Specialized are the Microsoft of the biking world. That maybe a bad thing or a good thing from your perspective.

Dizee

Scale is a full off road bike. Its geometry is cross country racing orientated, which will also make it good on the road (if you swap the tyres over) - the focus of the 'race' style geometry is on putting all your power down into forward momentum - not on all day personal comfort. I think from your original post you are looking for a bike to ride on the road so I think its a good match + looks ace too.

It would also be sweet off road with off road tyres.

Some people like race bike geo for general off roading too (like me), however a lot of modern mtbs have a bit more relaxed geometry and some people find this geometry more comfortable for longer rides / or more suited to their individual riding. Horses for courses.

Its 25 lbs with the off road tyres, so probably 23-23.5 lbs ? with road tyres (guess). It will feel a whole lot faster than you GT I did on the road, and will be more than capable of giving a few roadies a friendly scare too.

What 'off-road' tyre are you using! I know that Maxiss High Roller 2.3 Super Tackies are weighty but they wouln't fit on a Scott Scale!!

As much as it pains me - an M5 S-Works HT with V-brakes and rigid forks (Pace of course) would easily weigh in to the fight at around the 22lbs mark. Heck my '99 M4 FSR S-W's with discs, Mavic Crossroads and X-9 kit weighs in at just under 25lb.

doh, I see what you mean. Maths was never my strong point! It will feel a whole lot sharper at any rate (as a mtb for the road).
