Dear All,

I am thinking of stripping down my trusty old Hardrock Sport 2004/5 and rebuilding it with some good quality spec.

Do you think this would be worth doing i.e. is it a decent enough frame weightwise and strength wise to deserve spending some of my well earned cash on decent upgrades?

Can you afford a better frame? If not it's worthwhile.

I could but tbh i have enough full bikes now, so really fancy upgrading an existing one. From my limited knowledge of riding, the frame appears to be good - rides well and feels well, but not sure about the weight? Are they heavy?

Not a clue about the weight i'm afraid. If you've got enough bikes, do you need to keep this one? given the time of year you could tart it up whack it on ebay.

Not sure on the weight (but it's not too heavy IMO) but the frame feels good and strong on my 07 HR, I have upgraded many of the parts on mine - wheels, gears, brakes, bars etc and am very happy with the result.

As a plus I found a good deal on a new frame and built up another bike, for the wife, with the 'leftovers'.

But as you've already got a Malt 4, it can't be to build it up into an XC trail bike. How about making it into a big travel hardtail, or a commuter, or a single speed with a chain tensioner.....

A rockhopper or stumpjumper might be worth upgrading, but I'd think twice about chucking money at a Hardrock to be honest. If you really like the frame and it suits you then fair enough, but it could get expensive. Maybe keep that as a hack and invest that money in a new bike?

Suggest you upgrade frame, and take trusty bits from HR and put on better frame. Frame is (probably) the most important bit of bike...I did same from Rockhopper to Epic...the difference in ride/handling/downhill speed is noticable. Same speed uphill though :-)
