Hi Guys,

Not sure if I'll have much luck with this but a friend and I were lamenting the fact that we don't get out near often enough on the mountain bikes and have pledged to fit some early morning cycles in on the basis that the training will help us get the most out of the minimal time we have to enjoy the sport.

My question then, does anyone know of any half decent routes around Glasgow city starting in the West End? Getting out into the country isn't going to be practical timewise so we're looking for something in the town that stays away from main roads as much as possible and is a interesting a route as possible. Timewise, around the hour-hour and a half mark would be great. We wondered about following the Kelving walkway but not sure we'll be able to see anything at 7am - don't want to fall in!

Any suggestions appreciated!

Thanks,

Gylen

You could ride over to Pollok Park and do a few loops of the mtb circuit. Or up to the Forth and Clyde Canal if you don't mind it flat. Mugdock Country Park has some nice riding but given the time limitations you'd need to drive there.

Thanks for the reply - I've never been to Pollock park but I've just Googled it and it looks like it could be worth a shout. By the Forth and Clyde canal, do you mean up towards the locks at Maryhill? Don't know that area of Glasgow too well so if you have any more detailed info it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Gylen

Hi Gylen

The Forth and Clyde Canal runs from the Bowling Basin in the west, through Glasgow, and on to Falkirk where it connects to the Union Canal at the Falkirk wheel. There are lots of places where you can join the canal as it passes through Glasgow: the locks at Maryhill, Speirs Wharf, McDonalds on Maryhill Road etc... Depending on where in the West End you live, you could be on the canal towpath within about 10 minutes.

Cheers
Phil

Thanks Phil,

I think I know where you are now. I'm based in Hyndland but we've been heading up Maryhill road way so we must be going right past it! Will investigate further...
