Which bike out of these few????
Discussion
I have a cycle2work letter of collection for £750 to source a bike from Halfords (no I can't go anywhere else unfortunately).
Bike will be used mainly off road but also the odd commute to work and I'm big, 6'4" and about 15 stone so it needs to be a bit robust.
I know naff all about bike components so is there anyone out there can tell me which is the better of this bunch??
GT Avalanche Expert 2008 - £700
Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc 2008 - £750
Kona Hoss 2008 Mountain Bike - £700
Or any other suggestions aroound this price?
Cheers all.

kona any day! especially if you like twisty single and will be going out in the mud.
if your going on longer rides across the moors then the GT or specialised may be more suitable as this is more like the open terrian of the califorian hills where they are designed.
konas are designed further north where the terrain is more like the riding in the uk / especially the riding centres in wales and scotland. as a result they tend to be nippier in the twisty forests and are dont clog with mud as easily. just look at specialed full bouncers and how vanrable the rear shocks are to mud.
my views are based on when i used to work in a shop that sold mainly gary fishers(california), konas(vancover), oranges(halifax) and marins(california). the marins were our best sellers because they were always very well speced with kit for the price. but off road the konas and oranges are more responsive. I ride a koan single speed for the woods, orange full sus for wales / scotland and a fisher with slicks for commuting (its was cheap)
having said that i think is hard these days to buy a bad bike in that price range. you need to work out how your going to ride it and if your happy with the spec and most of all try them out in the car park, you really dont want a bike that your not going to ride because you find uncomfortable!
sorry for bring up more questions than answers
good luck custard

is your trex an ex mud dock team bike?
Not that I am aware, but it's at least 3rd hand, so anything's possible! They used to run spinergy wheels on theirs
Mind you we sold a few in our time of that model so there's probably a few kicking around...

go for the Specialized
i love mine
That's what I've ordered, should be here in a week or 2 i love mine
I also managed to get my buddy to get a Specialized too after my bro-in-law made me buy a Stumpy FSR. Damn that git!! He also made me buy new discs and now he's hammering on about buying pedals....on that note...time to open a new thread
Got the specialized yesterday and just been out on it for the first time
Cracking bike. The difference between this and my 6yr old Dawes thing is unbeleivable. Over fast undulated roughness that used to see my teeth rattled out on the old one, the difference is amazing. Smooth as you like
Apart from the front derailer not wanting to go into he lowest gear after 30min (cable stretch) it was sopt on, nowt fell off and I didn't kill myself.
I never really "got" the thing with spending a $hit load on a push iron but you can just feel where your money has gone on every push of the pedals. Sum of its parts and all that.
So if anyone else has got a new bike in mind, spend as much as your wife will let you and consider the Rockhopper....they're lovely things.
