Chain recommendations? MTB 9sp
Discussion
I need to replace my chain - I've always been a Sachs/SRAM fan, but I've been reading some pretty negative comments about the strength/longevity of the current line-up.
Does anybody have any recommendations or a shortlist, or even what to avoid?

Sram PC971 with a Power Link. The only negative things I've heard about Sram chains have been isolated product failures rather than any design problems.
Shimano chains you have to use a new pin each time you take it off the bike whereas Sram you can pop on and off using the Power Link.

True, but then I've snapped more SRAM than I have Shimano.Shimano chains you have to use a new pin each time you take it off the bike whereas Sram you can pop on and off using the Power Link.
I personally go for Shimano, HG/UG71 (whatever the XT one is) and ensure that on a DH bike, you use a shimano pin and for XC you use a SRAM link.
SRAM links on Shimano work well, but are a weak point and I've mangled a couple.

I did snap one SRAM and I beleive they are sensitive to wear I had one approaching the end of it's life as marked by the park wear tool and low and behold it bust, I tried to get that one extra ride out of it.
If you replace them before they are fine.

I run the 971's cuase I'm too tight to stump up the extra £5 for a 991.
irrc MBR did a mega test of chains some time ago and they concluded that the Sram chains were, overall, the best. There are however some very nice 'exotic' chains that look bling and are stronger but as Botranger says 'lightweight, strong, cheap - pick two'. You can't have all three.

I'm not overly bothered with saving a few quid here and there - it's going on my S-Works Epic after all...irrc MBR did a mega test of chains some time ago and they concluded that the Sram chains were, overall, the best.
