I need to replace my chain - I've always been a Sachs/SRAM fan, but I've been reading some pretty negative comments about the strength/longevity of the current line-up.

Does anybody have any recommendations or a shortlist, or even what to avoid?

Running 9sp XT chainset/cassette/mechs...

Sram PC971 with a Power Link. The only negative things I've heard about Sram chains have been isolated product failures rather than any design problems.

Shimano chains you have to use a new pin each time you take it off the bike whereas Sram you can pop on and off using the Power Link.

I've recently converted to Sram after my new 3 ride old Shimano jobby snapped in two different locations one after the other whilst trying to start a ride.

True, but then I've snapped more SRAM than I have Shimano.

I personally go for Shimano, HG/UG71 (whatever the XT one is) and ensure that on a DH bike, you use a shimano pin and for XC you use a SRAM link.

SRAM links on Shimano work well, but are a weak point and I've mangled a couple.

Conversely, I've never yet managed to snap a SRAM chain but have done in plenty of Shimano ones.

I run 8sp, though, so make of that what you will!

Sram 971 chain, but take the gold link out. Strongest combo, and easier to fix trailside than a shimano. The SRAM chains are stronger, but the gold link is not.

I've snapped more Shimano than SRAM

I did snap one SRAM and I beleive they are sensitive to wear I had one approaching the end of it's life as marked by the park wear tool and low and behold it bust, I tried to get that one extra ride out of it.

If you replace them before they are fine.

Interesting that the PC971 has been mentioned a couple of times...

I was originally looking at the cross-rivetted PC991 - does anyone know if this has any real benefit over a standard 991, or even the 971 for that matter?!

I run the 971's cuase I'm too tight to stump up the extra £5 for a 991.

irrc MBR did a mega test of chains some time ago and they concluded that the Sram chains were, overall, the best. There are however some very nice 'exotic' chains that look bling and are stronger but as Botranger says 'lightweight, strong, cheap - pick two'. You can't have all three.

I'm not overly bothered with saving a few quid here and there - it's going on my S-Works Epic cloud9 after all...

I'd stick with a P991 I can't even imagine what performance difference you'd get for the extra £200,

Another vote for SRAM 971. Snapped a couple a few years ago, but since then have been faultless. Usually run with SRAM cassette and X9 rear mech.
