So, it would seem that whoever installed the BB on my 2nd hand Zaskar did so with some kid of air tool or torque wrench.

This has the effect that the lockring came out fine, but the cartridge simply will not shift and has knackered not only the splined tool, but take all the teeth off the cartridgee as well.

So, any advice on how i might now get it out?

Arse.

nightmare,

you need to get some pentrating oil on this if you have not done so already, so you have broken the tool and the splines on the cartridge, you can get higher quality tools, you need to clamp it in bench vice, and turn the frame, are you totally sure you have the correct rotation for removal fot the thread.

worst case drill the bb out very slowly and carefully, and recut the bb tread in the frame, you may need to consult a good LBS and get some help from a good mechanic, i stress a good one as you need to save the frame and not have it butchered.

Good Luck mate.

Right, thanks for that! It was a Park BB remover that's knackered, which is what makes me think someone used more than normal force to put the BB in. The whole ISIS setup's been nothing but hassle since i got it, won't be using ISIS in future.

I'm going to douse it with more penetrating oil and then try with a plumbers wrench or mole grips to grip the outside of the BB and turn it from there. No vice, so not an option. Might file some of the exposed bit of the BB to give the mole grips something to grip properly.

Why is nothing ever easy?!

Because that's what makes life fun!

Did you manage to get the bugger out?

Not yet, going to give it a go tonight, got to stop in at B&Q and pick up a pipe wrench and mole grips. Luckily i've got a sodding great hammer.

If this fails, it'll have to wait until the weekend when i've got the time to make a mess and sort it out!

I had an old racer with similar issues after years of being left and the BB seizing into the frame. After several tools being wrecked in the shop, hours soaking in oil, vices, molegrips etc they welded a large letal rod to the end of the BB, clamped the bike in a vice and the added leverage worked. Not pretty, but worth it in the end.

Argh. Pipe wrench, mallet, mole grips, penetrating oil, nothing, no movement whatsoever.

Lockring went anti-clockwise and came out, but the cartridge shows no sign of shifting to clockwise.

Bugger.

Might admit defeat and run it into evans tomorrow, just don't have the tools here to do much more. Ideally need a vice, then a dril.

I had an incident once that did result in me drilling the bottom bracket as I couldn't get the BB out.

I had to drill out a screw yesterday on brand new XTR dual levers very very carefull and that went ok I am pleased to say, I wasn't amused and it was a last resort.

It is a pain but sounds like a drill out with utter care job.

Wahey, got the bugger out. New crank is in (without the £2 Shimano tool you need...) Now for the new chain and to adjust the gears and sort the pedals.

More of the same. Got the pipe wrench on it and a couple of big 'pulls' and it eventually gave. Thank goodness, couldn't be arsed having to take it to Evans or drill it out. New BB and crank installed along with new chain.

Happy man! Really need to go through the whole lot and sort it out, but that'll do for now!

Thanks for the advice all.
