Lands End to John 'o' Groats- Anyone done it?
Discussion
I want to raise some money for a charity and I've decided to do the end to end ride in order to do this.
Has anyone ever ridden this and do you have any tips or anything? Im thinking ill do it around April / May time so not too far in the future!!
The charity is Get A Head which is a Charity which funds research, equipment and beneficial complimetary therapies to improve the quality of life of cancer patients and their families. A friend of mine has had cancer 3 times now, she's 23...
Any help would be great guys - or sponsorship!! haha ill be setting up a justgiving page soon...

Many moons ago, a guy gave a superb speech at one of our club meetings about this feat.
He had taken 13 days to do it.
Every time he came to a town, he soon found the local tourist information branch and used their help to sort a B& B that was in his reach for that day.
A couple of times he felt a bit isolated on cycle routes which took him off the beaten track.
Of course, you could just do it in one stint with a back-up crew…

Good luck

It might be worth checking this forum out;

Look up a guy called Dave Johnson who tried to break the world record for the Lands End to John Ogroats on a Tritandem during the summer.
I think he managed the 12 and 24hour records but at about 36 hours gave up....might be a usefull source of planning/training info though as he is one of the key coaches for the High Wycombe!!

I did it in June 2003, June because it's usually warmer with more daylight so you can ride longer if need be. Also the kids are at school with exams so less traffic on the roads.
I'm relatively fit but don't race or do audax/sportif rides and managed it over 11 days without any real drama. Once you're past Inverness there are few choices of roads and so you meet folks in all shapes and sizes, riding anything from MTBs to full blown race bikes. One group I met at JoG looked like they'd never ridden bikes before but they still made the trip.
I'd aim for 14 days if I did it again and spend more time looking around and less rush to get to the next stop. It's also better to go in company - I rode solo but had the missus driving a van with all our gear in. It helps to have someone to moan at when it rains.....

June any year is bad - Le Sarthe beckons.
What's the traditional direction for doing this? I always envisaged riding North to South rather than starting at Land's End. Not wanting to sound too assumptive but I would have thought getting out of Cornwall would be easier after a 700-odd mile ride than getting back South from JOG's

Hey guys,
If anyone would like to sponsor me be it 50p or a fiver i would be hugely appreciative!
Basically, Im doing the LEJOG ride on May 2nd 2008 to support www.getahead.org.uk, a head and neck cancer charity. Im doing this ride as my friend helen suffers from Thyroid cancer. She's 23 and so far has had 6 major operations and was given 3 weeks to live at the worst point. She still has cancer and is currently undergoing another round of punishing radio-ioding therapy. All money raised will go to run these radio therapy centres and support the sufferers and their families.
You can donate at https://secure.efundraising.org.uk/tailored/donati... just select chris's ride from the dropdown.
Hopefully we should have a website up and running soon, www.letsfightcancer.co.uk where i will post details of the ride.
Thanks,
Chris
Edit: I'd also like to thank the guys over at detailingworld.co.uk as Gary at Refined Reflections has donated a Swissvax detail to be auctioned off at Helens Ball and Steve aka L200 Steve has sent a package packed with detailing products to allow myself to be auctioned off to do somebody's car for them. Thanks guys!!

Sorry to drag this up, but I do wonder the OP took inspiration from EVO (yes, our reverred monthly tome ).... staffer Henry Catchpole did just this a while back and has a blog site here:
http://www.henryismad.com/
A very impressive (to me at least!) sub 7 days I'd like to do it, but take twice (nay, thrice) as long and take in the sites a bit....

I can honestly say I didn't know Henry Catchpole had done this but I've just had a look at his site and I like the idea of the sponsored leg wax! that might make some sadistic buggers sponsor me just for that!
Sub seven days is very impressive, we're aiming for under ten but if we do it any earlier then that would be a bonus!
