Dear All,

thinking of doing another bike build, so looking at getting a frame for around £200 to £250 mark then progressing from there. I basically need a XC set up, general riding, nothing too serious. So what do you reckon to these frames. Which would you recommend? The viper looks interesting with the Carbon stays, but i also like the look and pedigree of the Scott Voltage

I wouldn't buy a frame off Neil, not after what happened last time. That poor child had their whole life ahead of them.

I'd go for the Kona. Great frame and the closest feel to the Stiffee.

Alternatively, how about an On-One 456 steel frame? Bit heavier but very good frame. And less than £200 notes.

Cove Handjob - another steelie but feckin' awesome. I would like a 2007 one (to replace the one that got run over) with the bottle opener on the rear IS mount and the cables routed under the top tube. £330 on Wiggle or UKBike Store currently. Earlier versions do come up regularily on eGay too. Perhaps I'll see if I can do a deal on buying both a Hustler and a Handjob?

Banshee (Mythic in the UK) Viento. Ali frame this time. Don't know how much as I can't get onto Freeborn's website right now. Although, I have heard a lot of bad things about Freeborn's customer service and reliability. My friend bought his Ellesworth from them though and he was satisfied with them(although he did have to wait a while). I have read a post by someone who ended up buying a Banshee Sciroco direct from a very good shop the other side of the Atlantic for half the price, it was received within a week, they included a free t-shirt and marked it as a warranty replacement so no import duty or VAT was charged to him.

It's now a slippery slope. Cause you'll need a FS next to make the most of the Alpine holidays, a Winter hack, a lightweight race mtb (although you won't be racing) and the list goes on. You then move onto the 'different materials' stage of mtb ownership.

Aaarrgghh too much choice already now. Don't know what to do.

Thos mythics do look nice, but TBH i don't want to spend that much this time. I must say i am leaning towards a Scott Scale 40 - look and sound very impressive, plus for £250 seems to be a good bargain.
Has anyone got/had a Scott Scale 40?

Scott XC race bikes have always been well received and given high scores in magazine reviews. I've never ridden a Scott mtb so I can't give any firsthand experience but, as you say, for that price it would be great value.

Scale 40 is a nice frame, i have ridden one of them and think they are cool and ride ok, my friend had/has one, i think he is in the process of getting a scott genious though now.

I have a cove stiffee which is stunning, but i have just bought a new 2007 cove handjob frame to build up as a XC/trail/winter all day bike, as the stiffee is highly specced in FR kit, and i fancy a lighter set up as a spare allday ride bike.

i mention this as i got a good deal, close to your budget on this frame from a LBS, and i reckon if you could stretch your budget a bit for one of these frames, you would not reget it.

However i wish you luck, and the scale 40 is nice.

I might know where you can get such a deal wink

i just resisted buying a hustler, to get another hardtail, my friends think i am mad, but no room for too many bikes, like the stiffee to much to replace the frame, and use the kit on the Hustler, can not afford to do a complete new build up with expensive kit.

so pm me if you are looking for a hustler,

Would it be OK to run some 130mm travel forks on a Scott Scale? The reason i ask is because on the ready built scale bikes, they all come with 100mm forks, so would 130mm detrimentally affect the handling?

Would slacken the headtube a bit, but nothing too crazy. Make the forks a tad softer and they'll be fineee.
