Rear hub noisy
Discussion
My rear hub has started to make a regular metal pinging/tapping noise, roughly synchonised with speed. I took the wheel off and when spinning it it feels unbalanced and rather "rough" through the axle.
I've never repacked it or anything like that - the bike is 3-4 yrs old and has had very light use up until recently when I've been doing some long bridlepath/road rides.
The bike is a halfords-cheapo Raleigh MTB with Formula quick-release hubs. Are these things serviceable, or is it worth splashing out for a new one? I guess I don't want the hub seizing up on my way to work..

Does the noise occur when your pedalling? if not it'll be the freehub and generally on cheaper bikes thats non-serviceable.
If it persists underpedalling its the hub bearings, which are mostly likely cup and cone. These will be serviceable by you with the correct tools(some thin spanners of usually 15 or 17mmm) its a relatively simple job or loading the bearings up correctly.
If in doubt take it to a bike shop, hub services are usually only £15 or so anyway.
