My beloved bike has a crack in the rear triangle!

The quick release for the rear suspension has been a bit wobbly for a while 'cos one of the aluminium spacers had corroded itself onto the steel QR shaft (it's a Marin TARA adjustable travel rear suspension thingie) so I suspect that may be the root cause of it..

I'm assuming that welding that up isn't really a sensible option (is it?) so now I've got to replace it.

Except the problem is... what the hell do I replace it with?

I need something that'll cope with the climbs at Cwmcarn, and also manage the annual pilgrimage to Morzine... and I've got naff-all cash spare to spend on it frown

GHW your Morzine trip seems to have been very expensive with that list you had and now this. Might be worth giving Argus a call and see if they can assist (Frame Sprayers in Bristol)

Failing that I can recommend the Orange Five mines done Cwn Carn and Morzine, but you maybe a bit more hardcore so what about a Patriot or a 224 if you are a Downhiller smile

My list of Bits that need replacing post Morzine

My list of bits that I replaced while in Morzine
Replaced my Fire XC Pro tires for Maxxis High Roller Super Tacky 2.35's back and front, which was a wise choice transformed the bike.

If only I could afford an Orange frown

You're probably right about the getting too hardcore for a lighter XC frame like my Marin though... and it's definitely time to upgrade to something with more up-to-date suspension technology on it.

Before splashing your cash, check your warranty. Speak to the bike shop you bought it from, it might be a few years old, but they might be able to help.

The crack that follows the weld is an interesting failure, and would suggest undercutting in the weld.

I had a 96 Marin Quake 5 - Frame replaced after shock bolt snapped folding plates either side of the shock, this was replaced by a 97 Quake 9 frame - This failed completely at the bottom bracket after 6 months and was replaced under warrenty with another.

This lasted 2 or 3 years until welding failed at the headtube/top/bottom tube area, again replaced under warranty by marin with a 2001/2 mount vision. I was also bascially using a XC frame for XC and DH they weren't really up to it.

That said all those frames were replaced via 3 different marin dealers all with a 1-2 week turnaround at no extra cost.

If you are the original purchaser I would take the frame back is it a 15 yr or lifetime warranty with marin?

I think I read that Marin had a lifetime warranty, I hadn't noticed fully how it followed the weld so neatly.

Be worth a chat with the a shop in case you can get a warranty repair, at the current time you wouldn't loose a thing.

GHW Sub's/Five's and Patriot frames do come up on eBay a fair bit at a reasonable money sometimes though it's hard to determine condition from a couple of pictures. You might get lucky if you need a new frame some of the 07 deals kicking about are pretty good from a whole host of manufacturers.

Be sparing with your story of still riding it whilst you knew that there was play in the QR.

Argos don't do Ali frame repairs only Steel. Nasty looking failure that, hope it didn't occur whilst at full tilt!!

Currently Edinburgh Bicycle Co-Op have Commencal Meta 5.5.2's on Sale at £1350. They are a great trail bike. Was awarded a perfect 10 by MBR (along with the Orange Five and the Cove Hustler).

If you are the original purchaser of the frame it's worth contacting Marin regarding fixing it.

Sod getting it fixed. Id never be able to ride the bike without thinking "when's it going to snap... when's it going to snap..."

The Meta 5.5 sounds a good call though. Its very much the bike of the moment.

No reason why you shouldn't check out the warranty / repair cost. You may be able to sell it for a few quid to someone looking to upgrade to from a basic bike, but lacks funds for a £1000+ new build.

I agree on both counts - don't bother getting a crak as advanced as that fixed - unless you like drinking out of straws.

Also, Meta 5.5 thumbup

Marin T.A.R.A. bikes had a 3 year warranty in the U.K. as of 2005:

I hope that helps.

I'm not the original owner, and it's a 2002 bike, so trying to get it sorted on warranty is out of the question really.

Quite coincidentally, I'm at a conference today in Cardiff and it just so happens that my local Orange dealer is just around the corner... They do some pretty nice discounts and interest free credit too.. Argh!

Maybe a beefy hardtail like a Crush could be on the cards....

Having just speant a week in Morzine being battered around by my Stiffee, I would recommend a full susser over a HT!

GHW as clearly a hardcore rider and one that uses the bike to the max, you really do owe it to yourself to go into the orange dealer and just throw you wallet at them smile You will feel better and we can oggle at a nice new bike picture.

mk1fan is right a full suss would be better for Morzine I wouldn't like to have done it on my Clockwork, hats of too mk1fan for doing Morzine on his HT, though he had two days rest in the middle wink In fairness he had sat on a rock at speed!!

My reasoning for the hardtail is (apart from the obvious price benefit) that I'm rather a heavy-handed rider who's always ridden full sussers and hence I could do with a bit of time on a hardtail to improve my technique.

Fair point.

If you're looking at HT's then check out the Cove Stiffee FR. I'm 15stone and have abused mine since I bought her new in 2003. Really solid bike but not that heavy. Mine is built up with Trail / All Mountain kit and comes in at a reasonable 27lbs. They are quite expensive new (£550 odd) but come up on eBay regularily. A 2006 one went for £280 yesterday including Chris King headset, Rafeface seat post andfront derailieur.

It does everything very well.

A Crush would be a better bet if you're more airbourne than Trailborne though.
