I am thinking about replacing my 14 year old Orange Clockwork with a Scott Scale 10. I will still use the Orange for commuting but I rarely go off-road now as it's getting pretty tired and I am losing interest in upgrading parts.
I always regarded Scott as a good brand but they always seem to be (along with Giant) the bikes that are slashed in price more than others and quicker too. I dont' really read magazines now so i am unsure on the opinion of Scott these days.

IMO I think they are very good balanced bikes and good value for money. I have a ransom LTD and i have had problems with the frame cracking twice as its carbon fiber and they said a faulty batch on the first frame a bolt came loose on the second one and each time i got a new frame, No questions asked and they were apologetic. Even though i have had problems i would buy another scott of them and there aftersales service is spot on as far as im concerned.
I bought a 10 a few weeks ago from that site.
I think the reason for the discount on that model is the fact that people spending £3k+ on a bike tended to go for the Scale Ltd, which was 'only' a few hundred more, so I guess they didn't shift as many 10s as a result.
The discounted price is a bargain IMO for a bike of this spec.
I used to have a Scott Endorphin Elite Racing which I loved, and was always going to replace it with another Scott.
The 10 is an amazing bike - very responsive, light and fast. Do it!
Also, get hold of some Tacx carbon assembly paste to stop the seatpost from slipping, a niggle which slightly spoilt my first ride.
...oh, and be careful with the tubeless tyres - I put too much pressure in (newbie), and blew the front tyre off the rim - easily rectified, but my ears were ringing for days afterwards

Good advice and I was very interested in the frame replacement issues. I am wary of carbonfibre and the potential for a huge bill if it was crashed on a trail. I have no knowledge of how strong CF is in certain directions. i.e. is it fragile to impacts after a crash from rocks etc. Can you 'puncture' the tubes? Scott seem to be great at replacement but can frames be reapired?
What was the difference between the 10 and ltd and how did the buying experience from the shop you bought it from?

This is my second carbon-framed Scott. I've had no problems at all, and I had the Endorphin for ten years. What was the difference between the 10 and ltd and how did the buying experience from the shop you bought it from?
Yes, if you have a big smash, a CF frame will be less repairable that other materials, but if that ever happened to me, I'd always replace a frame rather than repair, regardless of the material.
But for all day-to-day/minor knocks and spills, CF copes well.
CF absobs a lot of trail 'buzz', and does make for a slightly comfier ride.
The Endorphin had raised chainstays which reportedly gave up to an inch of travel, purely in flex.
I'm sure that the tyres can puncture, and it's possible to run regular tyres & tubes (presta) on the Mavic rims without drilling the valve holes. I may still make that change myself, as the 'blow out' did make me somewhat wary.
The main differences between the 10 and LTD (aside from the £700 premium) are:
LTD has full XTR groupset - 10 has a mix of XTR and SRAM (which are great BTW)10
LTD has Rockshox forks - 10 has Fox (which are slightly heavier, yet stiffer)
LTD has a different wheelset (not sure exactly which)
LTD has XTR brakes - 10 has Avid Juicy Carbon brakes
I'm sure there are several other differences, but they're mostly academic because the 2007 LTDs have all sold out. The 10 is arguably a better specced bike, but the LTD's focus towards greater weight savings. The weight of the LTD is 19.8lbs / 9.0kg, the 10 is 21.8lbs / 9.9kg.
Either way, they're both very light bikes.

I placed my order online through Pedal On, the bike arrived two days later. Absolutely no problems whatsoever, but I wonder what support may be available if I ever need to get anything replaced under warranty.
