Hi guys, I'm off at the weekend for a hack around CwmCarn and Afan, can anyone give me some advice on the trials and what I should take? I'll have my camelbak with tubes but should I take anything else? Of course I'll be wearing a lid but should I take pads etc?

Any advice appreciated biggrin

I don't bother with pads at CwmCarn but many people do. If you like doing divertions off the cliff like Neil_bolton then I'd definitely recommend them. hehe

yes They'll just get in the way if your doing some serious pedalling. Pads are for DH.

Having said that - ride the DH at Cwncarn if you have time. Its ace.
If you go right out the start, and follow the Red sections, theres nothing that a competent XC rider shouldnt be able to bomb down.
Its a great track, fast and winding, if not massively technical.
Just try not to get in the way of anyone if your not that fast and you'll be fine!

Pads are fine for Cwmcarn. In fairness mine are worn primarily to avoid a DMR pedal branded shin, but the extra confidence on the DH sections is worth the warm legs on the climb.

Great idea to a spare tube with you OP. Just remember that it's useless without a pump!! thumbup

Brake pads. Fecking brake pads - especially if it's wet; the dirt seems to be made of a mixture of sand and grinding paste.

I have DMR's on my bike and don't like the thought of getting one in the shin, got my discs too! Really looking forward to this now, that downhill at looks pretty fine too!

I carry a multi tool, a Leatherman multi tool, tyre levers, spare tube, puncture repair patches, pump - for both tyre and suspension, electrical or duct tape, spoke key, chain splitter, allen keys and a multi head allen key tool, mobile, wallet, car keys, brake pads, riding pads and a jacket if it's raining.

I get all that in my Camelbak Mule (don't ask what I'm taking to Morzine but I bought a Blowfish to get it all in).

Additionally I may carry my camera and a two-way radio.

Don't forget trail food - although at Cwm Carn a banana and oat bar will do.

CwmCarn is a really good XC loop. Very technical climb and brilliant descent. At the top of the trail the waymarked route splits into a freeride black run and a very flowing singletrack. They rejoin each other at the next Motorbike gate.

Afan is great too. Penhydd trail is a good warm up followed by the Wall. Or you can continue on to Glyn Gorrogwy or however it's written. Whyte's trail is very good. Skyline is very long with a lot of firetrack but some awesome singletrack sections.

Check out mbwales webpage for all the routes and trail reports.

Both areas are very rideable in all conditions (we swam a lot of the Skyline last time we rode it).

Enjoy!

Agree!

An afternoon in the rain at Cwmcarn will murder a set of pads.

And the rest.

I looked at my bike several weeks after having ridden there, and the level of damage to certain shiney bits is amazing - you'd lot imagine somewhere like Cymcarn to have stuff like that!

They could market that stuff as a fantastic abrasive paste...

Put 'em in your pack/pocket and don't leave them in the car like I did!
Made for an interesting descent with metal-on-metal the only way to slow...

First time I went there with half worn pads, the noise of metal on metal on the final DH section was very embarassing.
