I've signed up to do the pedal for Scotland (Glasgow to Edinburgh) ride in September, don't expect it to be too taxing but prompted by Nish's experience of being caught riding in the rain I'm looking to get something for my top half in case the same thing happens. Already got some decent lycra shorts and gloves.

Bearing in mind most of my usual riding is forestry tracks at the weekend do I want something waterproof like a jacket or just lycra? Long or short sleeved? Can they be had on the cheap (I'm Scottish)? Are long sleeved tops too hot during the summer?

Would appreciate any recommendations smile

Cheers

Altura do a nice range of cycling jackets at not too much £. Most important issue is proper fit for riding.

I have a couple of their ones both around £50. One is a rain jacket and one is a wind proof.

As for wearing them in summer. Well if it's that hot you won't need a jacket as you'll soon dry off.

Another vote for Altura jackets excellent value.
Plenty zip vents and flaps in mine for regulating temperature.
About 40-50 quid should do it.

I have gortex shorts (£90 ish) that go over the cycling lycra shorts. Keeping your crutch dry is important!

why not use "kneesies" and "armies".....thus allowing you to add long sleeves and trousers should you need to but if not they and easielly be stored in you jersey pockets!!

From 20 years of mountaineering & cycling experience, I will only say this - no matter how much you spend, or how much GoreSympaNikwaxCeramicTex you wear, if it rains hard enough you will get wet.

By far the most important piece of wet weather equipment is a complete change of clothes at the other end smile

One word: Montane

They do Event (waterproof but more breathable than Gore-Tex XCR) laminate jackets and ultra light pertex tops for running/hiking and cycling.
