road bike wanted
Discussion
Get some slicks and enter a couple of events with the mountain bike - if you like it then invest in a road bike that will reward the effort and eventually become your training bike when you finally succumb and shell out £3k for a properly blinged-up TT machine.
It's the natural order of things.

I did my first triathlon last weekend. Cycle was 20km.
I was going to be doing it on my MTB, until a mate said I could borrow his road bike.
I did the same 15 mile ride on both MTB and road bike when training. I was a good 7 mins faster on the road bike. Yep the MTB I used was a full susser (locked out) with trail tyres, but I found the road bike much easier to use.
IMO it isn't worth buying a road bike just for one race. I was lucky being able to borrow one. I will now be looking for a road bike though, as I have already decided I will do other triathlons.
Why not do a 10 mile(ish) ride near your LBS on your current stead, then have a test ride of a road bike from there to compare your times. If it is significant, you will probably want a road bike.
Don't know if this helps?

Probably get most of those 7 min back with slicks on the MTB.Gassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
