Depends on the Terrain as to the distance and time.

For example Cwn Carn is about 9.5miles and I'd look to do that in about 1hr 10mins of ride time and probably 1hr20 - 1hr 25mins with a bit of stopping for breath on the hills and gates.

In Swinley if I put my mind to it and ride solo (socially is takes longer with more people stopping and nattering) then I'd do about 14miles in about 1hr 30 - 1hr 45 ride time I can do that with out a pause if I am on my own.

It's hard to compare person to person but it's good to get a balanced exercise program that doesn't just do cycling related muscules.

My plan (doesn't always work due to life and work comittments)

Mon - Weights 2 areas Arms and Triceps
Tues - Cardio
Wed - Weights 2 areas Chest and Back
Thurs - Cardio
Fri - Rest
Sat - Off Road Ride
Sun - Rest or replace one of the Cardio sessions with another Ride.

Ask what I've done this week nought so far!! but tomorrow AM will do weights, and weights again Thurs with two rides planned for the weekend.

It's good to ride with others maybe people you don't normally ride with to get a gauge on how fit you are.

One of the best things I did was ride with a club for a few months, they had a last man here rule, so if you were last up the hill they left as soon as the last guy was at the top, I soon learn't to be quicker up hill and that has helped me know end and to keep going through the winter, even if it's gym work.

Generally I'll do an hours local ride on my hardtail, on varied terrain two or three times a week, and sometimes use it to ride to work and back, about 4 miles each way off road.

On a weekend a typical ride for me would be the new out and back at dalby, on my bigger F/S bike which is 24 miles, can do that in 3 hours, which is a pretty fast average. All offroad, V technical stuff, so very much a whole body workout.

Other than an odd hour in the swimming pool, thats mainly all I do. I have no interest in bulking up or losing weight - my only interest is being a better bike rider. Those things come as a side effect. I can't stand gyms so dont do any of that.

All I know is if you want to be a better rider, just ride. lots.

yes
I've found after years of competitive running that the weights, circuits, plyos etc are all very well, but the best way to become a better runner was to do the training miles.

I think the same apllies to any aerobic sport (cycling, swimming, running etc).

currently training for my next tour in NZ in 12 weeks, started at 1 hour a day, increased by 20 mins a week, at seventy percent of HR threshold, one day off a week, and an easy week after week twelve.Three races in between programe to give the legs a real hard day.Should be good, if only for listening to the ipod
i dont do any gym stuff as such, or core stability, just ride a bike.....which i love doing.

I like the beer and snacks approach to training. Really helps with the downhills. Uphills are so uch easier using the uplift method of riding.
