This is true, the other area of interest is the cable pull, i.e. how much cable has to be pulled to move the derailleur the amount required. So any shimano shifter will operate any shimano rear derailleur.The only other that needs to be considered is the spacing on the rear gear cluster, this is nicely sorted on mountain bikes they are all the same, whereas road is either campagnolo or shimano, why they cant all be the same is a shame it would make life so much easier.
