Hi all,

My old Muddy Fox is lumbered with grip shift, and for some reason, the indexing has gone, meaning that it drops onto the smallest ring on the back. The front ring is also starting to go - Is it just new cable time, or is something seriously amiss? (I need a new bike, or even an upgrade to quick fire's, but budget does not allow!)

Is the cable slack? Or is it the grip-shift not holding the end of the cable?

If the cable is slack, take it in until it's tight. If the shifter isn't holding the cable in place, it's time for new shifters (unless SRAM make replacement parts).

Getting hold of replacement parts for sram, pretty much the same as shimano, they list them, and they either dont have stock or they are not worth the cost of replacing due to extortionate part pricing.

Sounds as if the shifters are dead.

If its old 'GripShift' then I suspect that the shifter has simply worn out - they weren't that good originally for lasting well, especially in mud or with sticky cables.

I'd simply look to replace with something newer - Shimano is always good at the budget level.

There are a few 'grip' shifter on fleabay.

Alternatively your LBS might have a S/H set of shifters due to someone upgrading.
