I know this is a long shot people but I'm looking for a nice air-sprung mtb fork.

120-140mm travel with disc mounts and QR dropouts.

It's for an Orange Five so, ideally, I'm looking for a Fox Float R 130 but I'd consider others.

The Fox Float is good enough for Orange to spec it from the factory. I think that says it all.

How about the FOX Talas. Switchable to 100-120-140. Switch to 100 for the climbs and back to 140 for the descents. Best of both worlds then. I've got one on the Stumpy and think it's the nuts.

Tere is a review of some forks in the latest issue of MBR - they review Fox, Pace and Rockshox and Marzocchi i think

TBH, if you stick the main brands (Marzocchi, RockShox and Fox imo) you really can't go wrong these days.

Get the one that looks best on your bike smokin

One warning, don't get Manitou.

I've got a Nixon and its a great fork, but Madison have dropped them recently as their main importer and although Madison will do warranty claims for the time being, its questionable how easy it will be.

Stick with main brands smile

Pace are good too!

I agree. The thing is though, i am looking to spend some good wonga on some high end forks, but i am also a little colour concious and i want silver forks, but i notice many of the aforementioned brands (fox in particuLAR) don't do many models in silver

Most of RS's range is available in "diffusion silver" (kind of a matte colour, see pic in my profile) but depending on the fork certain specific models (e.g. World Cup variants) may have a more limited selection.

Colour match is the only important thing in a fork.

The Fox Talas is a great fork but you don't really need the travel adjustment on an Orange Five. And on the 2007 versions the travel adjuster rises up as you adjust the travel and leaves a very small gap. Which, I think, will allow dirt to accumulate and interfere with the adjuster. The spring rate is linear as opposed to the Floats progressive spring rate. I ride 2003 Talas on my Stiffee and they are brilliant, although after setting the fork up I've ended up using the full 130mm travel so I may as well have gone for the Float.

My S-Works is now wearing a pair of 80mm Pace RC39's. I've yet to ride them and I doubt I'll get the chance before Morzine.

By silver I assume you mean the bright silver, rather than the darker shades of gunmetal grey that Fox use on a lot of their forks.

Not to mention that the technician at specialised who was fixing my bike has a carbon stumpy FSR team frame spec'd with a float over the talas because he much prefers it.

I've just been offered a 2005 Fox Float RLC for £200. Just waiting for some pics but sounds like a winner so far.

Good choice biggrin

I ride an old Sub 5 and plan to put a fox float on it at some point. At nearly £400 they're a lot of money though given the bike only cost about £1600 and that was 4 years ago.

You haven't mentioned what year your Five is. Making some assumptions I suspect a 120mm fork maybe too short. However, you can re-arrange the bushes in the Floats to give either 100, 120 or 140mm travel. Not sure what Mojo charge for this.

£200 for 2005 Floats RLC seems an ok price (they don't tend to go for much less than that on eBay). Bear in mind that a service should be done AT LEAST once a year and it costs circa £70 from Mojo or TF. If they've just been done then great if not find out when it was last done.

Really?? My Float RLCs are a sort of chocolate brown. And they are great - matched to a Yeti 575.

Just done the deal on the RLCs. They're 130mm travel which will suit my '05 frame perfectly.

With regards to servicing, I'm doing a full rebuild so the shock and forks will be serviced along with the brakes and a wheel tighten up when I finish the build.

Thanks for all the advice guys...
