Rides in Swindon
Discussion
Hi James,
Live near Swindon too, and can recommend a trip up to the ridgeway to you. I'm out north of Swindon, and therefore aim for Uffington white horse, however Barbury Castle is closer to central Swindon.
As the old joke goes .... What's the best thing to com out of Swindon? The M4 ..... Very true in this case as that means that south wales is only an hour or so away.
Sling your bike in the boot and get down to Cmncarn (see thread with the stickey) on Sunday the 22nd.

I live out in Highworth, James.
There is a single track run with some jumps near Highworth on the way out towards Hannington. Coming from Swindon, you want to ride up the A419 and come off at the Cold Harbour Blunsdon turning. Head towards Highworth, but turn off left towards Hannington at the Freke Arms (sorry for giving directions by pub - it's the only way I know where anything is ). The road drops downhill for a couple hundred metres, then uphill for the same. At the top of the hill on the left is a gate and bridle way. The track with the jumps is to the left of this bridleway - cut into the bushes / trees.
2 things to bare in mind though. It gets very muddy when it's been raining - not in a fun way either. Thick sticky wheel jamming mud/clay. 2nd, as another thread on here suggests with the weather we have had, it is pretty overgrown .... I'm expecting this clear once the school summer holidays start and the local kids get up there and do a spot of gardening

If you are feeling a bit fitter, you could find your way out to Badbury Clump (close to Farringdon on the road that goes to Highworth). It's a good little wood to cycle around, with some good hills too. There's a pretty impressive jump slope dug into the hill if you come out of the car park, and follow the trails off round to the left.
Only the normal give and take of "for every downhill there is an uphill" to worry about.
Red Planet Mountainbikes (Wood Street in Oldtown) organise some evening rides out towards wroughton during the week too. They meet at 6pm and go from the shop (pop in and have a chat). Not sure what the routes are like as sadly I am never back from work in time for that.

No cycle paths unfortunately. The main roads that go out to these are busy commuter routes too.
I often use these roads for a cycle in the evenings, and the traffic can be a little on the more hazardous side.
Badbury is great for walking the dog if that could sweeten the parents for a lift
