Dear All,

went out for my first proper ride yesterday on my recently self built Cove Stiffee, and i am pleased to report nothing fell off.

Just one thing though - the noise from my rear hub when i freewheel is rather loud. Is this a problem, and is there anything i can do to quieten it?

regards

greg

no/little grease in it, strip it off and bang aload of grease on the pawls in there, problem solved.. alot of riders(trials guys mainly) love em noisy. its nothing to worry about either way.

i agree too but dont stick grease in it if its a mavic hub "a la crossmax" as it shortens the life by a great deal.Mineral oil only.

It's a hope Pro 2 hub. Will grease be OK, or should i use mineral oil?

I know what you mean. It lets people know you are coming. I may just leave it then.

Its fine - Pro II's are pretty loud.

Not as loud as a King though, and even those are not as loud as the trials spec Hope hub with 1 billion engagements.

Loud freewheels = cool biggrin

ive got same hubs mate, you'll be fine greasing it, wont do any damage atall, they are loud standard though. dont worry bout greasing it, it wont do any damage so long as every now and then you clean it. here, clicky...

not really, it started with the trials boys. adds a more mechanical chunkyness feel to it. noisy hubs do tend to attract an unusual amount of attention though! there's not really a boy racer contingency when it comes to mountainbiking.
there's pikeys though!

As another owner of a set of Pro II hubs there is definately nothing out of the ordinary with yours.

People always seem to comment on the loudness of mine, it's totally normal.

If you want the ultimate in noise nothing is as loud or as classic as the Hugi, thats a proper ticker.

One should never grease a freewheel (not enough clearance inside, so use oil), a freehub body, with the appropriate grease, yes, but never a freewheel.

there's absolutely no reason why not to grease it. ive had mine 2 years, greased and i compete at a reasonable level, its never missed a beat. greasing the teeth will do no harm to either the pawls or the springs loading them, most of the oil washes out the first run on a wet track, hence the trick of using grease.
