I bought a trek 4500 07 model last week. So far it seems to be a far easier bike to ride than the Gary Fisher Wahoo I had prior. The forks have lockout (a revelation to me on the road) and I changed the tyres for some nimbus armadillo's.
Now, being a lazy fooker I thought it was about time I used if for more than just getting to the station and back
could anyone point me to any decent articles about starting out/cycling for fitness etc? (prefer more road than offroad)
cheers

Check out What Mountain bike mag, its aimed at the beginner end, and they often have good articles about aspects of fitness and technique, its a good read.
But - you bought a mountainbike - Use it off road!
Trust me - it is soooo much more fun, and you also gain a lot more physcially - aswell as aerobic/leg strength your also working your uppder body, your balance and your mind much more.
Don't get me wrong, I ride road for fitness myself, but you have an ideal bike to go on some proper adventures, and proper Mountain biking is a much more enjoyable and fulfilling thing to do for fun!
