I have used my mobile - XDA Orbit from O2 - You can get Co-Pilot for it for £50. Designed for driving or walking. Adapt an incar bracket or just carry it.

Tom tom do motorbike units that are weatherproof i believe, and could be easily converted to mount on a bike.

Garmin, eTrex and Magellan all do hand helds with handle bar mounts and street level mapping, IIRC.

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305. Still to use it as a Sat Nav though. I just use it for the fitness functions while running or biking (cadence, heart rate, speed, time, etc.).

Also have a Magellan Crossover with off-road and marine navigation. Never used it outside the car, though I could. It's a bit big and I can't be bothered.

I have seen bike mounts for some other Magellan GPS units, such as the Explorer series.

Are you doing on road or off road?

The off-road stuff is pretty unsatisfactory at the moment. Only thing I've seen so far is www.memory-map.co.uk and thats PDA based so not exactly rugged.

Still waiting for a decent bike computer that can do OS maps...

i have a garmin mount on my stumpy's handlebar, worked just fine through 8 hours of lashing rain last sunday. Mind you, it's a bit heavy if you've invested in lightweight bike bits...

Ive got a Garmin CX60 with the topo maps of the UK installed. Its pretty good with all uk roads and most footpaths. Waterproof, quite robust and cracking colour screen that only seems to get clearer in direct sunlight. Only thing is its quite expensive if you come off and bin it.

Well the road angel 7000 can use memory map maps. Not sure its all that rugged either but definitely hints at the future. Thing is, I want a bike computer which does that as well as GPS logging, heatrate, cadence & etc...

There is also a competitor to the 7000 coming out soon, but I've lost the URL.

How about a Suunto X9i? It's a watch rather than a standalone GPS unit, Memory Map compatible, might be more convenient. I use a Garmin eTrex Vista with bike mount but I do worry about coming off and smashing it to pieces.

I do similar - use my N73. Krussel handlebar mount for the phone, GPS unit sits in the bag under the seat.

Although I'm starting to hate TomTom on the N73. Its now deciding that I need to go anti-clockwise on roundabouts and "turn right now" which involves crossing the central reservation.

Ooooooh, how do you get on with that?

I've just got a N95 and its got Nikia Maps on it - but I only heard good things about Co-Pilot...

Have you any linkys for the handlebar mounts?

Is it possible for me to use my Sony K800i?

I will need a separate GPS unit.

Apart from the unit and the software would there be any extra cost?

K800 for GPS? Not worth bothering with unless you have a majorly good data plan.

The only GPS applications I've seen for non-smartphones are Java apps that suck the maps from the vendors servers, so a lot of data.

You could possibly get a Nokia 5500 Sport for under £100, £30 for a SiRF III gps unit, download the Nokia Maps, and be on your way for not much.

N95 Krusell case :

(£11, looks a little cludgy, but its otherwise okay, they're probably some of the best cases around)

Krusell handlebar mount :

(£7)

Although I have heard bad things about the sensitivity of the N95s GPS - its a little slow. If its anything like the GPS built into my mates T-Mob Ameo, it seems to take forever to grab a signal
