What’s anyone’s top speed?

I recently finally got round to fitting a cycling computer to my retro 96 Kona Hardtail and have been boring my mates to death with endless figures and statistics, my faveourite being top speed, my max being 52mph down a village hill near mine, is 60mph on a mountain bike a possibility (remind me to buy a helmet first!) ??

yikes

What Village was that?

I remember going so fast down the road into Porlock in Devon that my legs couldn't spin fast enough to keep up with the pace. No Computer unfortunately, but that was overtaking cars all the way down .... The folly of youth smile

How fast are you going before you can't pedal any more?

And what gearing you run. "Normal" MTB gears connected to my legs spin out somewhere in the mid-30's

It was a hill that leads to Aldbourne, Wiltshire, down to the A346 Marlborough to Swindon road.

I never really get gearing, its all seems a black art to me, my Trek full susser has a great range of ratios for offroad but is completely useless on flat tarmac straights, where as my Kona seems perfect under all conditions (then again ive been riding it since I was 16 and am 25 now!)

High 40s slipstreaming a fire engine down the hill from Abbeystead to Quernmore outside Lancaster. Extremely scary when his brake lights came on!

This is too easy.

I've had over 100kph (around 62mph) on several occasions in the French Alps.

I'me sure I've done more than that at some stage using my old heart rate monitor, but that didn't record max speed and I daren't look away from the road!

No feeling like it in the world... (almost as good as drivingwink

I can pedal at 105 rpm max for any period of time - which equates to about 35 mph on my bike.

I regularly see 45mph plus on the A37 through Shepton Mallet, and can hit 40 easily on a lot of other descents, but VMax so far is 52mph on a hill in Dorset on the Ironman course.

Consequences of falling off at that speed just don't bear thinking about, helmet or no helmet. Serious rush, though.

wow 62! that is impressive, i'd love to try cycling accross a mountain range as I love going down and up hills. The rush is amazing, I almost prefer it to driving, although I only ever max it out down roads with excelent visability!

Just nudged 70mph on tarmac, up in the north of scotland, not actually a road but a tarmaced track for a salmon farm.

On dirt I overtook someone who was clocking 50mph as I went past. This was on puncture alley on the top section near les crosets.

Should say that both of those are on cycle computers, not sure how accurate those things are really.

i've done 45+ in the black forest in Germany and tbh i was so worried about the fastly approaching corners i had to slowed down.

But it must be great to have the confidence to hit those numbers on a regular bases...

I managed 72 mph in Benadorm on my road bike, heading out of the mountains and onto the dual carridgeway that leads into the city. Very very scary in a short sleeved top and no lid, but a massive rush!!

my mate had 52mph going from morzine to les gets last year and i was along side him so i guess that counts as 52 for me, on gravel over potholes and bunnyhopping ditches believe me its fast enough for the terrain!

110 kph on my madone and 106 on what was my Pace rigid, on the same tarmac hill, both with tail wind, no skill, just freewheel in the tuck.

I've seen 54 on my bike computer going down Slack Hill coming out of Matlock. Not sure how accurate it was but when i got to the bottom my face felt like it had been stretch back. It was a killer getting back up though.

You lot are all bloody mad!

Fastest speed i've clocked was 43 downhill on a road bike in Scotland, which was quite fast enough for me!
