Time to replace the old MTB
Discussion
Since the year I graduated I've had a Claud Butler Cape Wrath. It just works. But its no spring chicken and I'm ready to replace it. I think I can pawn it off on my brother too - so it won't be wasted.
Pending a few test rides of final candidates I think I'm after a hardtail. I'd like something not too heavy, for a mix of trail and offroad riding. But it will get used for more normal stuff if I ever persuade the other half to ride some more (she likes smooth and flat stuff - falls off at the first hint of an obstacle).
I've seen a few Scotts I like, what brand/model would the experts suggest with a budget of £500-£600 (I don't ride enough to make spending more worth it).
Also, I'm 6ft 5, 35 inch inseam. What size frame do I need on the various types of bikes?
I woud consider secondhand if genuine and in A1 condition.
Thanks muchly.

Probably the most popular - Specialized Hardrock / Rockhopper range.
Well rated - Trek 6000
or maybe: Cannondale F5 -

As for frame size, you really need to try the bikes - LG or XL probably

Consider second hand?
My riding mate (we both live in north Bucks) is selling a Commencal Supernormal with a top spec for a grand, but he could put some cheaper parts on to get it down to your budget.
I ride one and its fooooooking amazing. Neil_Cardiff has a mate with one and loves it too.

21" sounds about right. If you want something a little more individual look at www.merlincycles.co.uk and their Malt 1's and 2's. Great bikes and build up to quite light XC bikes, and the advantage is you can spec up and down on the kit to make it fit your budget.

I agree. I have just received my Merlin Malt 4 and although i have not had the opportunity to give it a good thrashing, it is indeed a lovely quality bikeJPJ said:
GB Bird - do you ever ride around Swinley Forest near Bracknell? I saw another Malt 4 there last Saturday but didn't get chance to say hello to the owner. Nice to see something less common on the trails.
No that won't be me JPJ, as i have not got to many trails, but i most certainly intend to get around more this yearGassing Station | Pedal Powered | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
