Has anyone got any experience of these things? I tried to fit one today but before i could get a decent torque on the top cap bolt the threads stripped out of the bit which locks in the steerer tube! Upon removing it its seems the thing is made of an alloy so soft it resembles plasticine! Anyone else experienced this? I was a bit suprised as Hope stuff is normally excellent.

Never handled one myself, sorry, but if the bike shop where you got it can't offer any assistance then give Hope themselves a call, the only time I have had a problem (disc brake fitting) they had a modified part in the post to me that arrived the next day, very very helpful company.

I've got one on my bike and had no problems at all fitting and running it.

Piece of cake and perfectly reliable.

Duff isn't really the word.

They don't fit in to all steerer tubes - but they are more than strong enough to pre-load the headset. Mine fits my Fox Talas very snugly and desn't need much tightening for it to lock. But my friends Mazochi forks were a real pain as the internal diameter of the steerer tube seems to be right on the edge of the HD's expansion.

Hope are very good and they sent out a new bolt to me FOC when I snapped mine during an install (I was my fault trying to do things too quickly).

Don't use the expanding cup/nut with a normal (ie steel) star nut bolt as that will strip the threads.

The only issue I have with them is that there are no instructions with them. Silly I know as they are dead easy for an experienced mechanic to fathom but not so for newbies etc.

I've got a feeling the problem is your "decent torque" setting.

That bolt only needs to be tightened until theres no play in the headset, any tighter is bad for the headset and your steering.
