I am toying with the idea of a GPS. I can only find Garmin units in the shops, are there others?

What about GPS mapping programs loaded into mobile phones - any good?

Can you use a GPS as a sat nav?

How easy is it to plot a route?
or are you better logging your start, getting lost and asking it to get you back?

What are the better ones?

What gadgets / functions do I need for MTB (and MX Green laning) and what are just gimmicks?

If I buy a Garmin, do I need to buy mapping software on top?

What does Topo do?
If I buy Topo, do I then need MemoryMap?

What other software is there?
What is the best software?

Do any shops allow you to 'try out' a unit?

What other items might I need?

How much will an average / decent setup cost?

I know there are a lot of questions. I'll probably have more. Please give me any info / advice / options you may have.

Finally, is it worth it? & do I really need it?

This is all you need - in conjunction with memory map (easily downloadable if you know where to look!). It does normal Tomtom type road navigation and then you can swap to ordnance survey maps - you can preplot routes on your pc, record the routes and elevation you ride etc. Also can get a bike mount.

£179 from John Lewis and fully waterproof.

Is Tracklogs better than Memorymap?

Do I need 1:25k or is 1:50k enough?
