Hi guys,

I have this bike... My brother gave it to me a few years ago. I would like to sell it but I have absolutely no idea what it is worth. I like mountain biking but I have tried riding cross country on this bike and it is hard work! It is quite heavy and the seating position is not ideal. I have some pictures for you:

The bike has a Planet X Jack Flash frame with:

Marzocchi Z1 Freeride forks
Hope disc brakes of some sort

Shimano XT front and rear
chunky tyres smile
"Prodidgy RACEFACE DH forged" cranks.
azonic handlebar/stem I think

if you want me to check out any of the other components let me know.

mods: I know this looks like a "for sale" thread but it's not, I need some help, so I hope this is ok!

Sad truth is that the complete bike probably isn't worth much second hand.

Scan ebay, and prepare to strip the saleable components off and sell them there. Most stuff attracts reasonable money if in good nick.

It looks pretty unabused, I'd say between £550-£650 complete. You are likely to make more spliting it as the brakes are quite desirable, the frame on its own will attract a wider choice of buyers as it is trials/dirt and not everyone will be a fan of the triple chainset.

It must have been quite painful taking a 14inch frame cross country!

Not a chance unfortunately. I'd say much closer to £200-250 really. Second hand bikes are worth very very little these days and that bike, although reasonable in its day, is quite out of date now and a bit of a bits-and-pieces special anyway.

Probable best bet is to break and sell it in parts on ebay if you can be bothered.

what do you guys reckon to buying a more XC oriented frame, handing that and the bike to a shop, getting them to buy the bits that don't fit if they need (BB, headset etc) and making into a slightly-heavyweight XC bike, then?

I'm 5ft 10, and my XC bike is a 14.5" frame... Nice and long though.

As for the bike - clearly its not suitable for your use. Swapping the bits over won't be ideal as most of the stuff is pretty heavy duty (RF cranks, HALO wheels ) so will still be pretty heavy.

But, theres some half decent stuff on there, It depends how good nick it is.
The cranks/forks/brakes will certainly be worth a few quid. If you are selling - I may be interested in the cranks and forks, depending on condition.

Oh, and also to add, as long as weight is not your ultimate concern (it should never be on a MTB IMO ) you could swap out the frame, wheels, tires and stem and with a good choice of frame would make a very ridable tought XC bike.

My hardtail is far from featherweight but its very solidly built, perfect geometry and comfy - thus making it an excellent long distance bike, that I can also rag around bmx tracks.

Just have to take it steady on the long uphills thats all.

I rode a similar set up to what you're talking about for years, over allsorts of terrain.

I had a 17" Kona Chute (hardcore hardtail) with Bomber Z1's, Hope M4's on Mavic D321's, LX/XT groupset and azonic bars stem etc. all fairly heavy duty stuff but it lasted years and didnt weigh too much.

Id go with about £250 for the bike on ebay, but i would say buy a cheap frame and swap the bits although this can sometimes be more trouble than its worth due to different sizes/fitment of components.

its certainly got to be worth more than £500 complete, but people are right it is very unlikely to sell at that price, but sell it all separately as it is all desirable kit and you should start to see a good return.

good luck.

It might have cost £500+ to build but there is no way that it is worth £500+.

It is only worth what someone will pay and for a bike like that you'd be lucky to get £250. Hence it is only worth about £200-250.

I've just sold a similar bike with all new components built up onto my old frame for £255.

I swapped my frame for a Cannondale chase which is strong but light. I then put in a 30+cm seat post and with the seat up it's great for XC and with the seat down its great for jumps etc.

Ok fair enough, but I still think it's worth more than that if not sold on ebay, if the condition is as good as it looks, Mk2 frame with the bash plate fixings so can only be 5 years max and I'm guessing it hasn't been used in anger much for a few years, that build is the best part of a grand and looks nearly new. i still think its nearer my estimate than £200. But my opinion is a bit academic as it is deffinatly a bike that needs parting out.

I used to have one, didn't like it, but Planet X did a good deal on the frame and Fox Vanillas, ended up selling the frame within 3 months so it worked out that the Vanillas cost me half the RRP wink

Hi Chaps,

i still have this bike, unfortunately minus both wheels (and discs...) etc. as they got pinched from the "secure" bike place at the apartments where I live. This means I still have the cranks, front and rear derailleur, forks, and brake levers and calipers (??). obviously no discs as they were on the wheels, or wheels, or rear sprockets.

I need a bike to get to work with, so is it worth keeping these bits and sticking them on a frame?

I was also wondering if I would new front chainrings and chain to match to a new rear sprocket with new wheels?

any XC/hardcore XC frames to be recommended?

thanks.

also: I hate the fking bds that stole part of my bike, they are losers and i hope the die a long and painful death the good for nothing tts. They tried to saw through my lock too but gave up fairly easily by the looks of things.

Why not stick the remains on e-Bay and then buy an entry level XC mtb - a Carrera Vulcan springs to mind or one of the Edinburgh Cycle CoOp Revolution range of mtb's.
