Hi

I have been riding from solihull to birmingham (8 miles) for a while now on a giant atx 850 (mountain bike) but I have a job in coventry now, I want to know what sort of speed I can get from a road bike average without pushing too hard.

I am fit and keep good speeds on my MTB but dont really know whats best to cover the 17 miles now.

Also whats peoples views on cycle assist? and what bike should I look at? my giant would kill me, gears are all wrong and the setup is for cross country.

Cheers

Depends on how fit you are but a roadbike should be around 3-5mph faster than an mtb on mtb tyres for the same effort. If you are fit then 20mph average on a flatish route would be ok if you had little obstruction.

Have a look at something like a Giant FCR 3.0 or 4.0 designed to be fast yet comfortable drop handlebared road bikes - quite light & very good value. Cycle to work scheme best way to buy if you can.

The FCR models have straight handlebars dont they?

I was looking for a bike for a similar purpose recently and went with a Genesis Day 01. Much quicker than my old mountain bike.
