Just read in the newspaper that Chris Hoy, whilst breaking the 500m world record recorded the 'highest self-propelled speed ever attained by a human on a bike' of 72kmh which is 45mph!
Remember this is on a track. He is on top of his game at the moment, a real unsung hero IMHO.

Will Hoy would have done 145mph easily - but he's dead. You mean Chris Hoy !

yes

Never heard of Chris Hoy, but knew it would not be the late Will Hoy.

I thought that the highest self propelled speed in the guiness book of records was some bloke cycling in the slip stream of a Viper or something.

I am a bit suprised that 45mph is the highest for a cyclist. I can sometimes get to 32mph on mine and i am most definitely no professional, so i would have thought the hightest speed ever would be much higher than this

Diminishing returns as the extra energy required is proportional to the square of the speed, not a linear relationship. Plus the extra power required to overcome the wind resistance at a higher speed.

Plus alot of the other speeds that have been achieved have used assistance to attain that speed such as a windbreaker and a slope or mountain in some cases.

Is this reference to Will Hoy who used to be in the BTCC?

I would imagine so.I did a double take when I saw it as Will Hoy is sadly no longer with us.

Oops sorry post now edited, can't edit title.

45mph doesn't sound much but it was self propelled which means no slipstreaming cars/other bikes etc..

Add in the fact that it was done at high altitude with no acclimatisation and its just bow
