OK, should hopefully be a simple one.

I want a bie to ride to work on, across London. I have my proper road bike that I used to time-trial on, but it is not really the right choice for a ride to work, so, anyone got any recommendations?

I was thinking of a cannondale F700, but also maybe somethig like a Trek 4500 might fit the bill.

Frankly they all look pretty similar. I assume a mountan bike styled thing with road wheels s what I am after.

Any thoughts?

Halfords -> GT i-drive

Good cheap efficient full sus for urban commuting.

Cannondales are beautiful bikes, but ridiculously over priced much like Kleins.

There is a secondhand one up for £400 down the street, so I thought 'd get that if they were anygood. I'll have a look in Halfords, though, thanks. I hear that they are actually pretty decent bikes.

I'd probably recommend a Scott, depends how much you want to spend though. Absolutely no point getting full suspension for commuting in London. Unless you are planning on doing some Red Bull style urban DH on the way. What's the budget?

I had a F700 (Cad5 Frame I think), it was brilliant.

Something's not right here!

Ahh yes someone on PH recommending Halfords.

NB if that is the bike for you surely you can get it at a local place/online cheaper? Does your bank do a cycle buy salary sacrifice scheme? I can't remember the proper name for it but the idea is the company buys the bike and you repay them out of your gross salary. Additionally if it is set up correctly they/you don't pay VAT so a higher rate tax payer ends up getting the bike for less than half price with an interest free repayment scheme.

I'll ask about it, thanks.

I might just get one on Loot, though.

I prefer to get used, as there is a decent chance that I find that I just never use it much. I never get enough sleep ,and I suspect that it may turn out to be a rare morning that I can face it.

In essence you can get a bike that costs £500.00 and it will only cost you £314, less if you are a 40% tax payer.

Anything light, hard tail probably best (so you can take on kerbs) and with slightly narrower than normal handlebars.

Go to a local cycle shop and try some out, you'll be surprised at how different they can feel.

That's a neat looking bike. With a twin, or even a single chainset, it would be even better.

I am not really sure. It's a bit hard with bikes, as I have no idea how the curve looks with cost against what you get. I suppose used only about £500. If I do actualy get back into it, I'll probably upgrade in a while, which is why I am thinking of buying someting used.

I am really getting bitten by the idea now. I used to love the feeling of monstering up hills, and it would be nice to do it again.

How much (and I hesitate to ask, as I expect to be shocked).

For that particular model it is £800+ but I did show the pic of the highest spec model. The next model down is around £400, same frame but without the carbon fork and the spec suffers slightly. I had a quick look on Evans and they had last years for £319 but I didn't check what sizes they had. The frame warrants upgrade at a later date if you think it necessary.

FWIW

One of the companies that I do payroll for is today purchasing a bike that is going to cost £800.00, how much will it cost the employee? £38 a month over a year, a grand total of £456.00 Bargain.
