Hi,
I am looking to buy a bike to ride to the gym.
I’m not sure if I should get a road bike or a mountain bike.
I’m thinking road bike as I would like to do some road type training at the weekends.
my concerns are that being 6'2" and 18st 12lb/118kg will I have to get a special bike.
I am looking at the second hand market as price is an issue.

Also can any one advise on training distances/times.
I do Olympic weightlifting and so explosive power is what its all about for me.
How far/long(time wise) is too far/long to stop building power.
im in Brighton and it does have a cycle track that I can train on.

Thanks

Roman

I think you should make contact with somebody at your local track with regard to getting a training program organised and advice on a suitable bike.

I would ask for a training regime geared towards the 200m sprint, standing Kilo and Olympic sprint (team of 3 over 750m). World record for standing Kilo is now under 1 minute.

You may be best off with a track bike with fixed wheel on one side & single speed freewheel on the other + brakes equipped with a pair of handbuilt sturdy clinchers built for sprinting & 25c tyres to ride on both road & track (assume your local track is a banked Velodrome?). Pete Matthews in Liverpool built some excellent strong sprinting wheels for me. 'fixedwheelnut' who posts on here may be able to advise further..

Find a very quiet or unused road for on road interval sprint training - warm up + 10 standing start 300-500m sprints + warm down. Concentrate on pulling upwards and backwards as well as forwards & down to develop a smooth efficient pedal stroke at high rpms & never stop pedalling on a fixed wheel!!

Manchester Velodrome has excellent taster sessions & I would have thought Herne Hill in London could do something for you too.

To make contact with a local velodrome/coach/club try:

Feel free to PM or email me if you want more info.

I'd get a mountain bike as they are more fun IMO.

You can use an MTB on the road for training, but you can't take a road bike into the woods for a bike of fun
