I am using the 100 miles in a day as my targe for this year. Has anyone done this and how long did it take. I am thinking of doing the Sustrans Putny bridge to Oxford route. I have done the Putney bridge to maidenhead section a couple of times but has taken a long time (approx 6 hours)and I know it gets a little more hilly as you hit the Chiltens. Any advice would be appreciated.

For longer rides comfort and eating and drinking correctly are the most important things, usually you can manage in a day what you can ride in a week, so if you increase your mileage to be doing shorter 30-40mile rides totalling 100 a week you should be ok

How long it takes you depends on your fitness and the terrain involved, generally I am between six and eight hours for 100 miles, check out the Audax uk website for long distance cycling for rides in your area and training tips.

Thanks for the link. Had a good scout around the site. Its just increadable how far some people cycle. one chap did 28700 miles in a year. I've never even done that in a car. May join but they seem a bit stuffy. Is anyone on here a member?

Only done two century rides - both between six and seven hours. I find laps of a local route less intimidating than riding away from home for the whole day.

It also depends on what you are riding (bike) as well as terrain and weather conditions. I'll average about 14-15 miles an hour on normal road rides of the 100 mile(ish) length, and would love to get that up a bit.

As mentioned, the need to take on energy food and drinks is very important, and also being clothed appropriately for the level of exertion, time and expected weather.

I did 100m a few summers back with a couple of mates & took a "leisurely" 11 hours at it. I didn't eat as well as I should have done & almost bonked at about 80m.

Good luck, as others have said, make sure you are comfortable.

Am doing the South Downs way this summer which is nearly 100m IIRC, but will be spending 2 days doing it.

Yep, I am you will generally find friendly people on Audax rides occaisionally some people may seem offish but it can be they are struggling or just don't feel like socialising, I rode the Invicta 200km Saturday and everybody was quite sociable riding in small groups that form with people riding at the same pace.

You don't have to be a member to ride, most entry fees have a 'Temporary Insurance fee' of £1.50 to ride as a non member, but BCF, CTC, LCC membership can be accepted as they cover 'third party insurance' with their membership.

By the way when you look at the calendar any rides with AAA points are Hilly

Rode the Salisbury City Century several times in the 90's. Best time was iirc about 6.5 hours. As said above, the secret is to make sure that you eat and drink regularly. It also helps mentally to break the ride down into sections e.g the Salisbury ride had tea stops at approx 25, 50 and 75 miles so just thinking about 25 mile sections made it seem less daunting.
