question about racing bike brakes. drops?
Discussion
Quick question, I believe racing bike brakes come in different drops? To be accurate I'm looking at campags, I've sen a lot that are 49mm drop, where is this measured from? The bike I'm building measuring from the centre of the mounting hole to the centre of the brake track on the wheel gives roughly 36mm, (its on a 650c wheel if that makes a difference). Any ideas?
The drop is from the place it mounts into the stem to the bottom of the bar, some quote it as centre to centre, make sure you know where they are measuring from. If in doubt visit local bike shop and measure. The wheel size doesnt make a difference, its you anatomically that makes the difference and what kind of position you are looking for. I personally used to like the old profile hammer bars as they were a medium drop, but with a good grip area that fitted my hand perfectly. The current crop of carbon bars are looking good with flat tops. Dont go too narrow, I use a rule of thumb that the bar should slot over your shoulders, this has always seemed right for anyone I have fitted up with a set of bars.
The difference is that some calipers (ie the ones with a bigger drop) have space to run a proper mudguard under them. The others don't have the space.
At a guess, the distance is measured from the centre of the caliper mounting spindle to the centre of the adjustment for the pad. Not entirely sure though

Hi Benj, Thanks for the quick reply, I think were at cross purposes, I'm talking about calipers!
Doh, sorry, yes.
No there is no difference for 650, as the posted above points out its to do with the drop from the caliper mount to the rim braking surface. Measure this, then compare to the spec sheet.
#note to self read more carefully.
