Been looking at this Trek 6500 Disc 2006 Mountain Bike no serious stuff.
Just to use once or twice a week off road basically to improve fittness.
Any alternatives or advise would be appreciated thumbup

The bike you link to looks good, reasonable components on a reasonable frame. You will be OK with that. However look at Specalised and Marin as they do reasonably priced bikes.

nearly bought that bike myself last year. went for a Merida instead. tis a nice bike & cant really go that far wrong with a Trek, they've got a good name for themselves

Check out www.paulscycles.co.uk/offers.php?cat=1 we found them cheaper than evans.

I've just bought a 2006 giant trance 4 with upgraded hope disc brakes for £600.

Before you go and chuck £600 at a bike you've never ridden, I'd strongly advise you go to a proper local bike shop (not Halfords!) and try a few out. Talk to the guys/gals in the shop and see what they think. Different manufacturer's frame sizes can feel quite different from each other, so it's important to find one that suits your size and riding preferences. Most places will price match too, and buying from a local place means you can go back there for servicing, advice and upgrades

Saying that, I purchased my GT from Evans online, but only because it was last year's model and none of my local places had it in stock.

As above, excellent advice. Go and ride all the bikes you are considering. Frame geometry makes a massive difference to how the bike feels to you and how comfortable you are. This is vital if you are going to enjoy riding, a well fitting £300 bike will feel so much better than a poor fitting £600, you will feel at one with the bike and it will go where you want, rather than having a constant battle to stop being thrown into the scenery....."Try before buy"...

I have a trek 6700 SLR and it is fab. A great hard tail.. Dont even look at full sus with your budget. Personally I avoided Specialised as everyone has one, my mates ones have earlier bearing failures than TREK etc......
The Treks have slightly bigger frames than Specialised and so the best way to choose is to sit on both in a shop.
