With the roadworks in my area at the moment I have been making the odd trip to work on the old bike. Well it came to an end last night when I sheared the thread off the crank. Thankfully it was only a cheap bike and I am going to use the wifes and set it up with my stuff and continue using that for a while.

What I wanted to know is if anyone can point me in the right direction to a decent bike for not a lot of dosh?

I seem to rack up a few miles on road so any suggestions would be welcomed.

How much should I spend for a bike that will last longer than a few commutes?

Or should I build my own? Would it be more trouble then its worth?

I would an off the shelf solution would be the best solution, building your own is fine but it is not always cheap and to get the bike you want out of it at the end requires component knowledge.

Before I could recommend brands, was the old bike a mountain bike, hybrid or road bike? This would be the first question that needs answering.

It was a Universal Mantis (suspension mountain bike). TBH not my finest decision to buy, it was bought on a drop of a hat because they were selling them off and I have regerted it ever since.

Are you looking to replace it with a mountain bike?

Any thoughts on suspension this time around?

I am not particular about a mountain bike.
Neither suspension. It will be mostly used for commuting.

Check out ebay for some top used bargains, or have a look on the evans cycles website at their range of bikes of all shapes and sizes. There are some weird (to my eyes) looking commuters on there that would no doubt rocket through the traffic.

Just had a look at Evans and the Specialized Sirrus seems to get a good review from websites.

A bit more then I want to spend but might be worth a look when I get chance to swing by Evans.

Check out the ride to work scheme that they talk about on that site though.

It's a government backed initiative to encourage people to cycle to work. If you can get your employer on board then you could pay substantially less. How does £228 sound (with a salary of 20k in the calculator)?

Asked my company about doing this, but buying a full sus mtb for a 80 mile daily round trip commute might have looked a little too suspicious

Reading the small print it seems it is not straight forward.

The employee never owns the bike, the employer does. If the employee wants to own the bike they need to pay the fair market value for it from the employer.

No wonder it has never taken off, the employee pays for a bike they wont possibly own without paying full market value for it.

Have I got that right?

Kinda.

As I see it, you pay a fair price for it at the end of the year - by which time its used and worth almost nothing...
