Out this afternoon terrorising the locals with a spot of urban mountain biking, and my forks decided to get poorly.

I have an 06 specialized XC pro with Rock Shox Recon forks. They are air forks, and now they have "burst". Rode my bike home, but they are not working. They are sat in the completely compressed state. I am assuming that the seals are broken, but know nothing about how to fix them.

Can you get rebuild kits for them, or are the forks basically trash?

Is a rebuild a DIY home job, or is it best to stick it in the shop.

If they are FUBARed, what forks would you recommend for a replacement. Durability and weight are my main concerns. Don't want to spend north of £400 ish. I've always fancied a set of Pace forks, but is the cost justified to have a shiny bit of MTB porn hanging off my frame?

Please help as I'm really depressed now weeping

Fox have got a new range out the 32's

My friends and I all love Fox forks.

Check them out on www.mojo.co.uk (The Official UK Distributors - but you'll have to buy them form a retailer)

Click MTB then Fox Forx on the menu on the left.

It does sound like you have blown a seal, parts will be available but I recommend the bike shop or www.tftunedshox.com/index.htm rather than doing it yourself - it is going to cost a fair amount.

Question is, if this has happened, are they suited to your riding?

I'm a coil man myself

That's what I thought. Riding too hard for the the types of forks, it seems.

Thought did cross my mind too. Still got a bit of Xmas "spirit" too which don't do the poor bike any good.

Mate suggested that I try pumping the forks up. I was sceptical given that I assumed that once the air had forced its way out, the seal was broken and would not hold again. Amazingly they appear to be holding pressure and feel ok.

I'll try and get out and ride on them during the week to see what's what .... Thought's still there that if it happened once because I was a bit hard on them, when will it happen again?

Fingers crossed.

They probably have a blow-off valve to let the air out before the seals go in the event that you overcook it?

Not on cheaper forks.

Probably bust the seals I'd hazard

I'll find out Friday. Got a half day to take it up the forest and give it a bit of grief.

I'd have thought if the seals had gone, they wouldn't hold pressure like they are at the moment ..... but then again, I ain't an expert.

Fingers still crossed, but credit card dusted off just in case.

Any oil loss? if the seals got dry this might have caused air to leak.

Maybe the seals just became temporarily unseated due to the increase of pressure (it has to go somewhere )....I don't know anything about Recons but if it is holding air again fine I do not think you have done anything terminal to it

You surely have a warranty on your forks especially as your bike is a 2006 model, so take them back to the dealer and get them sorted under warranty.

Not in every case - 2006 bikes are released in 2005 usually - we've had 2007 bikes since Sept this year, as has always been the case with bike manufacturers.

1 year parts and labour warranty of bikes except for frames.

Be aware though, they are quite picky on warranties, as they will try and ascertain as to whether the bike has been abused or not, whether by bad riding skill or blatant trashing.

Although in ths instance, I don't see why they would refuse.

Most bike warranties start when the item was purchased. I know my mate who works in warranties often gets 04 or earlier kit in on warranty, purely due to them sitting in shops for years, then being sold thus thats when the warranty starts.

Don't quote me... but pretty sure thats the case

I know that - but was just pointing out that you can't assume the bikes age against its model year...

I think you should check the small print under the warranty section on the back of the Specialzed 2006 catalogue, it clearly states:

'Suspension Attachments & Suspension Related Equipment has a Limited Two (2) Year Warranty'.

I have just typed what is printed on the back of the 2006 catalogue and the same wording is printed onthe back of the 2007 catalogue I was told the same as above by the dealer I have just bought my 2007 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR from.

Obviously the forks would be inspected to see if they have been misused but I do think the OP will be able to get them checked and repaired under warranty.

Edited because I can't spell
