Following the success of my mountain bike build I want to get back in to a race bike, I haven't been in the scene for a few years for a few reasons, one of which being my old bikes death!

I thought I had a good start as I was trying to buy an argos 753 frame, with 531 forks and a load of Campag parts for £50, all i would have needed were front and rear mechs, bars, headset and wheels.

However that fell through so I am back looking, and basically on the beg, I've been round the bike shops and there are some lovely bikes if I want to spend £500 upwards but that really does leave me cold, what i would like is to build a nice classic bike, I don't expect parts for nothing I expect to pay fair prices for them but I'm basically looking for bits that will have been retired as people move up the ladder.

Parts needed:

Frame: Preferably 753.

Wheels: I can buy new Vuelta wheels off ebay for about £60, any advice? Or some decent usuable Mavics would be great.

Everything else: Campag where possible.

If anyone has any of the above that isn't really wanted anymore I would love to buy it off you!

Do you want to ride it or look at it?... if its the latter I have a set of Campag Delta brakes laying around.(Standard silver finish) I think I have a slightly worn C-record crank set also.

I did the same a few years ago but have yet to finish. A 50th anniversary D'accordi frame in Comlumbus SLX fitted with Campag C-Record gruppo. The gruppo is the Century anodized stuff that was a gunmetal anodize which only came in 500 gruppos. I am still hunting for a set of new Campag Clincher rims from the same era and a gear cluster/cassette for a set of still-boxed hubs I have. The delta brakes are pure design porn but hopeless on a daily-use bike.

Got a brand new unused 8spd Campag Record cassette available (11 or 12-23 I think) if that is any use? (rrp was about £80 originally!)

'course if you happened to have an old MGB rear view mirror (the one that clips onto the central upright) or a pair of clear domed Lucas 594 lenses kickin around...

Could this be an idea for a 'swap shop' section in the forum?!

Hi Lr driver, Yes I'd like the brakes and the cranks please! Can you email me with roughly what your looking for?

And I may be able to do a swap for an MGB mirror, but which are the domed lenses you mean? I can't think what they are?

Hi Wildoliver

An MGB mirror like this in nice gondition would be fine:

The Lucas 594 clear lenses were used for sidelights on a lot of 50s &60s BMc & Rootes cars - here is a pic:

alternatively I'm also looking for a pair of rubber boots & bulb holders for Lucas 488 sidelights (not sure if I need single or double though)

not so bothered about the lenses or boots - thought it worth asking in case you had some lying around being in your line of work.

Happy to send cassette in exchange for a good mirror with the mount only if not

I've had a look and don't have any of them!!

As a bit of advice though, the mirrors didn't look like that when new, that appears to be a repro version, the originals had a gold back, think it was paint over brass. I might have one at the end of this week if you aren't in a rush.

Re. your sidelights either minispares or landrover specialists. they will be cheap.

Cheers

If you want to do a straight swap for a mirror thats fine by me, I think postage would be the same for both items. If you dont get one in you could have the cassette for say, £10 for me to put towards a repro mirror.

Just let me know what you would prefer and I can post out to you if required.

Well the build is under way.

So far I have got an Altitude frame, built by Steve Ashton of extreme frames in Preston Lancs, it was his showpiece frame made for Columbus to prove he was worthy of working with 753, it is quite literally a work of art I am truly in love with it and cannot wait to ride it.

It has a 650c front mavic cxp33 rim and 501 hub, with a vittoria tyre.

Campag head set and BB.

Campag 980 rear mech, this was a budget buy and was only ever a budget mech but it's lovely! Very nice quality, reasonably light and gorgeous.

Have a front mech and cinelli bars on the way.

Basically I'm trying to keep all campag/mavic if I can, just building it a bit at a time, I am now after a set of shifters, brake levers and calipers, rear hub and rim (or complete wheel) and I'm not far off done.
