OK - this is a numpty question...

Bear in mind that the last bike I had with gears was a Raleigh Grifter (with the twist grip don't forget...)

I bought my bike (Marin Bolinas Ridge) a few years back and the place a got it from got it fully set up and all was fine until I found that if I was putting big pressure on the pedals my chain would slip. I don't tend to use the bike for serious off road stuff so I mainly have it on the middle hub on the crank and a smaller gear at the wheel. For example (it's a 24 gear bike)I'll have 2 selected at the crank and 6 or 7 at the wheel and the chain will slip if I'm putting above normal pressure on the pedals.

Is it just a case of 'learn to use your gears properly' or is it something wrong. I just dusted the bike off as work had meant I hadn't had time to ride it recently and I had the bike serviced and the gears were checked and adjusted as part of the service...

Cheers

Could be two things:

1) If the chain is slipping from one sprocket to another (between sprockets) then the derraileur needs adjusting. You can do this by adjusting the tension on the cable using the barrel adjuster on the derraileur. You either increase or decrease the tension and this alters the movement of the derailleur from one sprocket to the next. The derailleur should sit almost perfectly on the sprocket without making a noise after every shift.

2) If the chain is slipping on just one sprocket (in a forward motion) then the chain and/or the 8 speed cassette are worn and need replacing, i.e. the chain has stretched and therefore no longer sits perfectly on the sprocket causing it to move from side to side and slip when pressure is applied. The chain in this state will gradually wear out the sprockets on the cassette too.

Just to add to Top Trump's suggestions

1) Could also be a bent component, dérailleur hanger, dérailleur cage, Etc.

2) If this is the case look for the teeth on the cog(s) that are slipping to be undercut on the back side of the tooth (shark finned). Take the chain off and compress it in a straight line, take a measurement, then pull it apart to it's maximum length and measure again. There should be no more than 1/4" stretch. If either condition is present then replace the cog set and chain at the same time.

Does the chain slip when you're putting high pressure on through the cranks (e.g. climbing a hill in a high gear, or riding very fast in a high gear)? If so, it's probably a worn chain. I had the same problem, got a new chain and problem solved.

Hi

It's when I put pressure on going up a hill...

TBH the bike has had barely any use so I'll be a bit cheesed off if any parts are worn...

If you've hardly used it then this is highly unlikely. It's probably my second suggestion then - gears need adjusting, which is a relatively easy job.

Btw, your tuned RX7 sounds the business. I've always fancied one.

Thanks for this - I'll get them checked and adjusted again...

The RX is a bit quick - it's one of the reasons why the bike doesn't get used much, my spare time tends to be spent depleting the ozone layer I'm afraid...

All the best
