I got my Marin Wolf Ridge out yesterday with the intention of going out and getting muddy.
The rear shock,a Fox Float RP3, must have been leaking air out gradually and felt wallowy, so I stuck some more in so it felt better, but I would appreciate some advice or if there is a rule of thumb about what pressure to run it at for optimium effect.
When I bought the bike last year the bike shop could not find a manual for it, so set it up in the shop and it was fine.
I weigh 15.5 stone and have the bike set with 6 inch of rear travel.
Any tips from the collective knowledge out there would be appreciated.

Generally you should run the shock with about 30% of its travel as sag. So when you're sat on the bike in a normal riding position, the shock is compressed by 30%.

I run more than that on my Tomac (Downhill bike) as its personal preference and the suspension ramps up quickly at the end of the travel.

Ultimately... try different settings and see what suits you.

As above.

For an XC bike try to aim for 20-25% sag - I tend to put slightly more air into the shock than I know I need and then release air using the button on the pump (may depend on your pump) until I reach the sag I am after - a zip tie or dirt on the shock can help record where the sag is.

Then I'll put the rebound to it's slowest setting and gradually dial it in until I am happy.

It does all depend on where you ride and what you prefer in terms of comfort, the more sag you run, the more inefficient your pedalling action will be.
