Fed up with all these 'what bike' threads yet?

No? good.
I saw a bike in Halfrauds today, made me want one,
I used to have a cheap basic mountain bike, loved it to bits, stupidly traded it in for a ladies poncy 'hybrid' bike, and it never had the same love as my old one used it about 5 times in 6 years.

So that needs to go and be replaced with a bike I love,
budget tight- talking less than £150, as it has to be an Xmas pressie.
Dont care about suspension or any mod cons, I just want a bike with big FO tyres and the least ladylike as possible.
Anyone know of any special offers?
Any advice on buying?

£150.

Don't go full suspension. I guess you are after a do it all cheap bike.
You should be looking front suspension. I'd try to find the lightest one going as at this price top spec isn't going to be an issue so I'd look for simple things.

Light as possible, heavy is just hard work cycling A - B, uphill or even lifting it onto bike racks.
Cable V Brakes are normally just as good if not better than crap cable Disc brakes. Hydraulic disc brakes are better than both.

Ride a few and find out what geometry you like.

If you want bike knobbly tyres, they don't cost much for a pair so don't worry about that as an extra.

Everyone is going to say spend a little more, so I may as well be the first I'd also say go second hand. And buy after christmas when everyone else is selling their unwanted gifts, this really is the worst time of the year.

This budget falls outside my knowledge a little, but I'll suggest you look at GT, Ridgeback and if you can find them, Nirve if you want new. On the manly looks front, ignore them, if you buy a bike that looks beefy for £150 in reality it'll be anything but and twice as heavy as it needs to be. Good idea avoiding gimmicks, forks and disc brakes like the plague. FO tyres (2.1 Tiogas for old school beef ) can be had for a tenner so much better idea to find a well made simple bike then add them later yourself.

£150 is not going to get anything with decent spec stuff on it. So avoid disk brakes and forks. MAybe look on evans web site for last yrs stock. Maye 250 might then find you something worth having.

I know like anything in life its better to spend more to get better quality, but its going to be used 3 times a year, so I literally want something that goes whan I pedal and stops when I brake.
Wont bother with disc brakes, and will go for light, tyres I will put on after from the sound of it

thanks guys

Find your local proper bike shop and see if they have anything second hand.

Agreed, look for something second hand. I picked up a hardly used WS (womens specific) 2004 Specialized Rockhopper for my girlfriend for £120 a few months ago, admittedly off a friend but thats not far off the going rate so you should be able to get one for under £150.

Something like that will be much lighter and better made than anything you can buy for £150 new (especially as you should budget for helmet etc too), so will be far nicer to ride which is just as important if you're an occasional cyclist because if you don't like riding it you'll NEVER use it, as you found out with your hybrid!

If you have to go new try saracen| www.saracencycles.com/

Don't like them myself but for something thats not getting ridden much but looks cool they are probably one of the cheapest.
