Flowing the thread in the P&P I was wondering how most of you travel when you’re on your bikes? I cycle every day and I find that the roads in Glasgow terrifying. The buses and taxis tend to think of their vehicles as large suppositories. And occasionally you get a real nutter on your hands. So I travel along the canal cycle path and then along the Kelvin it adds about a mile to my journey.

I have a regular route, 20 miles long. It consists of:

About 3 miles of urban roads - worst bit!
About 10 miles of canal - best bit (apart from the mud)!
About 4 miles of farm roads - nice bit, don't get bothered by traffic
About 3 miles of urban roads - okish, all quiet.

Takes me about 90 - 115 minutes to do that lot, depending on the amount of mud on the canal really.

I have a circuit through Langdon Hills and around that area- all off road apart from a few hundred yards from my house to the woods. About 8 miles all in with a decent combination of 30mph+ (30.8mph best in dark and 35 in daylight) downhill sections and sustained climbs. Pretty good workout and takes about 40mins on a good day.

No commuting for me- personally I hate riding on the roads although the few times I have taken the bike over the car (usually out of necessity- damn cold weather, flat battery issues!) it always surprises me how much ground you can cover and some journeys are actually quicker by bike. If only some scrote didn't want to steal the thing when you park up at the other end I would probably do it more often!

13mile each waycommute from Sidcup to Liverpool St. on a road bike, three times a week then training rides in Summer for triathlon or other event training (i.e, London to Brighton). All of that when weather permits.

Don't do v.cold, don't do v.cold and wet! i.e, stop in Oct and will start again in March/Apr.

I'm now getting out on the mountainbike, Leith hill done a couple of times and just got back from a couple fo days MTBing in Sierra Nevada (superb!). Will be mainly on MTB over winter but looking to get turbo trainer to keep the road muscles in check and aerobic fitness up.

BTW for commuting don't you find these canal paths too slow? I tend to find cycle paths etc., useless so have to use road (riding at 20-24mph)

I'm very lucky in that I can get from my flat in Edinburgh out to the Pentland hills in about 40minutes. Its up hill all the way but only involves about 150meters of road in total. The usual pentland loop takes just on 3 hours door to door.

Otherwise, regularly at Glentress. Its a bit of a no brainer, easy drive down to Peebles and a very rewarding ride. Can sometimes be seen at Innerleithen when i'm feeling more adventurous. Have ridden Cairngorms, Laggan, Fort William, Learnie, Peak District and some other stuff...

This weekend heading down to the South West of Scotland to ride Kirroughtree and Ae. Never ridden Ae before so should be fun. Last Saturday i was riding near Braemar and threw my first snowball of the winter!

Happy days

Lunchtime training ride is from central Bath out/up to Marksbury and back - about 14 miles, takes 40 minutes.

Weekend rides on a series of loops from home, all on the roads, from 15 to 115 miles depending on how much time I have.

Randomly to work, 2-3 times a week 17 mile each way (usually use motorbike) then nothing for a month, depends on weather and how busy at work. MTB around Sevenoaks at weekends, 2 trips to Afan Wales for the weekend and 2 weeks in Morzine this year. Race Cyclo Cross season Oct till Jan. Rode Bristol Bike Fest 12 Hour and the odd Gorrick and Road Race. Whatever and whenever I fancy really.

French Swiss border this year.

Cycle in London every day (about 8 miles) and occasionally cycle with a few friends in Esher (mainly off-road).

Being a Londoner, we usually go for a few night rides (Around 15 miles) with a pub stop.

I've got to say the most fearsome beast out there is a bendy bus, watch out when they turn !
