I'm getting this urge to buy a shit load of really bright lights, strap them to the handlebars (floodlight style), put a couple of blinking LED lights on the back, a relective stripe over my shoulder, and go off riding in the night over my usual route (canal, farm tracks, and some urban B roads).
Am I mad? Or is it possible these days to buy lights that illuminate everything ahead of you, instead of the poxy lights I used to have in my college years?

Would a light thread be worth a sticky this time of year mods?

Put it this way, when I finish a ride with my HID and jump in the car, the car headlights don't look especially bright
Im not saying a 13w HID is actually brighter or has better coverage than 2 x 60w car halogens, but its certainly in the ballpark, when a car overtakes me on the bike I can still see the beam of my HID on the ground over top of the car's beam. Overall angle of coverage across the road though, obviously car headlights still win because they have big directional lenses to direct the light downwards and across the road, rather than the basic 12 degree beam that the HID has which obviously isnt as directional.
