Dear all

Well it seems i have killed my bike. My 2004 Spesh FSR was in getting a new rear shocky today and it turns out that while fitting it, the guys noticed some hairline cracks on the frame. Boo and indeed hiss....

And to make matters worse i bought it from a friend in Chamonix who used to work in a bike shop but he doesnt work there anymore so i haven't got any paper work. Double boo and triple hiss... (paid cash and he says its out of warranty now anyway, house insurance specifically excludes bikes)

So i dont think i've got much option but to break it and sell the parts and to get a new bike. I'm going to phone specialized today but i dont expect to get any joy out of them.

Time to bite bullet i guess and buy a new bike. For all round UK trail riding the three bikes in my head are a Spesh Enduro, Orange 5 or a Giant Trance (2?). Anyone care to comment on these or any others. Budget? ha ha ha, totally skint but i know that i am not goimg to see much change out £1700.

[rant mode]

Its my birthday today, i am doing a rubbish office job, last week i got offered a job in whistler for the winter the day after i renewed my flat lease and a new flatmate moved in so had to turn it down, i had to get my spine manipulated last night by a physio and have to go back again on friday, spending money on a bike means all thoughts of chopping in the saxo for a mint 205 GTI or Clio Williams have just gone down the pan.... i could go on!

Off for lunch!

[rant over]

Moonie tyring to but really

Happy Birthday beer

How about just buying a new frame and using all your current parts? The majority will fit straight on, you may need a new BB and seatpost though. Would save a lot of £££.

Good luck

yes

My brother seems to get through alot of frames, he gets quite a few off ebay for very little money, builds bikes around them (usually with the remains of the previous version...) The local bike shop even went so far as to tell him most of their business is no longer selling bikes, but building them from parts people have salvaged and want re-fitted to ebay stuff!!!

If the gear on you current bike is decent spec, no point selling it only to replace it.

Cheers guys, you are of course quite right in that i could just buy a frame and build up around it using existing parts...

But, and here's the rub, i have been wanting to upgrade to a more 'heavy hitting' bke for about a year now. The FSR XC just hasn't taken the punishment over the last few months and has needed near constant upgrades, but because i have had one eye on a new bike for 07 the upgrades are OK but not brilliant! (mmmm lots of buts in that paragraph, time for an 'if')

If i were to transfer across to another XC frame then i would still be 100m front travel, Shimano XT hydraulics, LX rear mech (nearly dead), deore front mech (very nearly dead), Deore cranks and SRAM attack shifters

When what i really want is 130-150mm with fly lockout, XT all round with SRAM X-0 / X-9s and Avid jucy's...! AAARRRRRGGHHHH Why i am such a kit pimp?!

I will defo look into the frame swap option, if the figures are really good then i guess thats the way its going to have to be. Interesting the comments that there's as much frame replacements as new bikes....

Must admit... second hand is a rather sly way of buying bikes. They depreciate sooo much. Just picked up a Santa Cruz Chameleon frame (worth £400ish) with a load of Easton stuff, BB, new headset and a bunch of other stuff for £200 posted to me. Frame has a few marks which is to be expected but it seems to be structurally sound.

It does mean I'm going through bikes way too quickly at the moment as something else takes my fancy and its time for some deals

when my Giant NRS XTC cracked, i phoned Giant and i could get the frame replaced at a local Giant dealer at no cost (dealer tried to let me pay but were payed by Giant) because it was a fault in the design. i didn't have any papers because i bought it secondhand, just try to find out if it's a common problem and confront the importer, good luck!
